Teacher: Carsten Wills

Subject Area: Social Studies
Grade Level: 9-12

Common Core Standard: SS12.1.2 Analyze the historical development of the United States
Constitution and treaties and how it has shaped the United States and Wyoming
Government.

Anticipatory Set: We will start the class off talking about what does free speech mean.
Where do these laws that protect it come from? What specifically is free speech? (Crash
Course Video)

Objective/Purpose : Students will be able to correctly identify where and which pieces of
legislation protect their rights, namely the first five constitutional amendments.

Input : Students will need a brief understanding of the constitution and how it pertains to
the country.

Model: We will in each slide, break down the verbage and language used to outline the first
five amendments in the constitution.

Guided Practice: In this unit the students will analyze the original text of these amendments
through careful reading. They will study the exact language of the amendments in order to
understand not only the intent of the Founding Fathers, but also the way these words have since
been interpreted. This will be done as both individual and group work, and will be evaluated by
applying their understanding by identifying instances of these rights being used/abused in
current events.

Check for Understanding:We will look at a few examples in recent events that supposedly
infringed upon, or definitively stepped on any of these first five amendments.
Closure : Students will have to use the Google Form quiz to finish out the class, thus proving
they understand the basics of each amendment.

Independent Practice : Students will be required to find at least one more situation wherein
one of the amendments are currently being discussed in the media and write a short
summary paragraph on how said amendment is affected by the situation.
