An earthquake has caused a block of buildings to collapse, leaving a large debris site in the

centre of the city. Below is a bird’s eye diagram of the crash site.

Site A is the actual location of the buildings, leaving debris of 10m in height. Site B on the
other hand is just small rubble that has scattered from site A and is only 0.5m high.

Due to overwhelming volunteer support, this will only cost the council a twelfth of the
expected $360 /m3 .

The council would like you to assess:

a) The volume of debris in:


i) Site A
ii) Site B
b) The total cost to clear the area and
c) How much the council has saved through volunteer work
