ABSTRACT

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the respiratory tract that causes

hyperactivity of the bronchus when stimulated. Asthma attacks are influenced by
multiple factors with one of them being gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
GERD is a pathologic condition caused by the reflux of stomach contents that
enter the esophagus, with multiple symptoms arising due to the involvement of the
esophagus, pharynx, larynx, and respiratory tract. The purpose of this research to
know the relationship between the level of asthma control and the occurance of
GERD at the Lung Clinic in Dustira Hospital during 2017. This research used an
observational analytic method with a cross-sectional design. The subjects were
asthma patients that came to the Lung Clinic in Dustira Hospital who met the
inclusion and exclusion criteria. In total, there were 34 respondents who
participated in this research. The samples were selected using consecutive
admission. Data was collected from November-December 2017 through the
GERD quesionnaire (GERDQ) to assess GERD symptoms and an ACT
questionnaire to assess the level of asthma control. The results showed that from
a total of 34 patients, 25 patients who did not control their asthma experienced
GERD (95,2%) and out of 9 asthma patients who controlled their asthma to some
extent only 1 patient experienced GERD (4,8%). There is a significant
relationship between the level of asthma control and the occurance of GERD on
asthma patients at Dustira Hospital in 2017.
