Abstract

Overlaying new concrete over old concrete is unfailingly a part of the construction process.

This thesis will be aimed to evaluate the bond strength between old and new concrete. The bond

strength at the interface shall have controlled factors, surface preparation and joint angle.

There will be two test methods to perform to determine the bond strength of concrete, the

Slant Shear Test Method and the Modified Bond Strength Test Apparatus with Rotational

Corrector, (MBSTA-RC) which will rely on the Universal Testing Machine (UTM).

The old concrete surface will be prepared to have three (3) different surface preparation,

particularly, smooth, rake-roughened, and brush-roughened. Connection between old and new

concrete will be at three (3) different angles 30˚, 45˚, and 60˚ to the horizontal. Three (3) replicates

will be subjected to Slant Shear Test and MBSTA-RC, thus a total of fifty-four (54) specimens.

For successful interface bond of old and new concrete, it is essential to better understand

the mechanical behaviors at the interfacial bond of old and new concrete while considering surface

preparations and joint angles.
