Density Worksheet

Directions: Answer the questions and solve the problems. Show your work for each problem and circle your answer. Do
not forget to include your units on your answer!

Helpful Hints:

 Volume = Length x Width x Height

 1 cm3 = 1 mL (both units to measure volume)
 Mass is measured in grams (g)

Questions:

1. What is the density of water?

2. In an oil spill, the oil seems to float on top of the water. Does oil or water have the lower density?

3. In an oil spill, is the danger greater to birds and marine mammals than it is to fish and other organisms that live on the
ocean bottom? Why?

4. How is the density of oil an advantage in the cleanup?

5. Corn syrup sinks when poured in water. Does water or corn syrup have the higher density?

6. Why would an oil spill be an even greater disaster if the density of oil were the same as that of corn syrup?

7. A block of aluminum has a volume of 15.0 mL and weighs 40.5 g. What is its density?

8. Mercury metal is poured into a graduated cylinder that holds exactly 22.5 mL. The mercury used to fill the cylinder
weighs 306.0 g. From this information, calculate the density of mercury.

9. What is the mass of ethyl alcohol that exactly fills a 200.0 mL container? The density of ethyl alcohol is 0.789 g/mL.
10. A rectangular block of copper metal weighs 1896 g. The dimensions of the block are 8.4 cm X 5.5 cm X 4.6 cm. From
this data, what is the density of copper?
11. Calculate the density of sulfuric acid if 35.4 mL of the acid weighs 65.14 g.

12. Find the mass of 250.0 mL of benzene. The density of benzene is 0.8765 g/ml.

13. Calculate the MASS of a liquid with a density of 3.2 g/mL and a volume of 25 mL.

14. A block of lead has dimensions of 4.5 cm X 5.20 cm X 6.00 cm. The block weighs 1587 g. From this information,
calculate the density of lead.
15. Calculate the DENSITY of a 500 g rectangular block with the following dimensions (measurements): length = 8 cm,
width = 6 cm, height = 5 cm.
