ASU-Mayo Research Seed Grants

This document describes a partnership program between Arizona State University and Mayo Clinic Arizona that provides seed grants for new collaborative research projects. The goal is to fund pilot studies that will lead to larger externally funded projects. ASU and MCA faculty can apply individually or as teams for up to $40,000 per year to support equipment, travel, personnel and other research costs. Applications are evaluated based on scientific merit, collaborative contributions from both institutions, and likelihood of future external funding. Funded projects must submit progress reports and are expected to apply for external grants within 18 months.

Arizona State University and Mayo Clinic Arizona Partnership for Collaborative

Research Seed Grant Program

PURPOSE

The ASU/MCA Partnership for Collaborative Research (PARCORE) is offering a Seed Grant Program to
encourage new collaborative research projects between Arizona State University (ASU) investigators and
Mayo Clinic Arizona (MCA) investigators.

The projects selected for funding will be those that involve an active, hands-on role of both the ASU investigators
and the MCA investigators. The projects should be well conceived pilot studies, with clear milestones and with
the expectation that within 18 months of being awarded a Seed Grant, the ASU/MCA collaborative investigator
team will submit a competitive proposal to an extramural, peer-review agency or foundation. Furthermore, it is
expected that the resulting new proposal will have a total budget at least 10 times the amount requested for
Seed Grant.

Research projects may be laboratory or clinic-based; applications in the following areas are strongly encouraged:
cancer, obesity/ diabetes, imaging, biomedical informatics, healthy lifestyle promotion. Highest priority will be
given to new projects with the greatest likelihood of enhancing future collaboration between ASU and MCA. The
site of the work may be at either MCA or ASU, or both. Where appropriate, space for funded research projects will
be made available either at ASU or MCA.

AWARDS

Individual projects are eligible for funding up to but not greater than $40,000 per year.

ELIGIBILITY

ASU Tenured and Tenure-track faculty and MCA Consultant and Senior Associate Consultant faculty are eligible.
Only one application per research team will be accepted and an individual principal investigator is eligible for only
one award annually.

COST ITEMS SUPPORTED

Cost items that may be included in the Seed Grant proposal budget are as follows:

• Collecting and analyzing pilot data to be used in a multi-investigator proposal.

• Specialized research equipment critical to concept development.
• Travel to collaborating research groups for data collection.
• Literature and data archive searches, copying research materials.
• Workshop participation or training to enhance research capability.
• Technical or support personnel.
• Outside Consultants.

Neither ASU* nor MCA will charge their institutional indirect rates to Seed Grant projects.

*Contact your ORSPA project officer to obtain a copy of the institutional indirect cost waiver.

APPLICATIONS

Please submit the proposal and appendices (except ASU Routing form 300) as a single Word file

The proposal should not exceed six pages (double-spaced, 12-point font).

The Cover Page should include

 Title
 List of investigators and their institutional affiliation
 One paragraph abstract summarizing the study

The remaining five pages should contain the project description using the following headings:

 Hypotheses and Specific Aims

 Significance
 Methods (including clear and specific contributions by each investigators)
 Statistical Methods, if applicable
 Interpretation of Possible Study Results (both positive and negative)
 Data milestones
 Budget Summary and Justification
 Future Proposed Extramural Funding Source (agency or foundation and program), Expected Budget, and
Submission Date

Additional materials/appendices:

 Curricula vitae including relevant publications/scholarly contributions during the last three years plus a
list of current awards and pending proposals (two pages per investigator; NIH biosketch format) - using
the template provided in the following pages
 Budget sheet (one for Mayo and one for ASU) - using the template provided in the following pages
 ASU investigators – Proposal Routing/Approval forms - using provided ASU Routing form 300.pdf
 Past seed grant recipients must provide an additional page highlighting submitted and funded proposals
that resulted from the prior seed grant funding round(s)

EVALUATION

A Study Section, with members from ASU and MCA, will evaluate and grade the proposals. Outside reviewers may
be invited to participate, as needed. The Study Section will prioritize proposals by focusing on several key
elements, including scientific interest and innovation, validity of the proposed methodology, evidence of a true
collaborative effort with meaningful contributions from all investigators, and the likelihood that the protocol, if
successful, will lead to a competitive external grant application or otherwise significantly enhance future ASU/MCA
collaborations. The final selection of proposals to be funded will be made by Dr. Michael Crow, President of ASU
and Dr. Victor Trastek, Chairman of the MCA Executive Board.

BUDGET

A detailed budget outlining the costs of the project should be submitted with the proposal using the standard

2
st st
template*. The funding period is 12 months (January 1 through December 31 ).

* MCA investigators interested in submitting an application for funding are required to contact the Office of
Sponsored Projects Administration as soon as possible. Investigators with clinical protocols must also contact the
appropriate Clinical Studies Unit-Operations Manager and Statistician for assistance in determining resource needs
and appropriate study design. Applications received less than 10 business days prior to the submission deadline
will not be accepted.

REPORTS

 A one page progress report is required at 6 months and 12 months following award activation and
should provide an overview of project progress against proposed milestones, as well as highlight
progress toward pursuit of external funding (template will be provided on the website)

 A final written report, including one copy of the research proposal submitted to the external funding
source, must be submitted to the program office within 6 months of project completion (no later than
June 30th).

A. Personal Statement
Briefly describe why your experience and qualifications make you particularly well-suited for your role (e.g., PD/PI,
mentor, participating faculty) in the project that is the subject of the application.

B. Positions and Honors

List in chronological order previous positions, concluding with the present position. List any honors. Include

selected publications based on recency, importance to the field, and/or relevance to the proposed research. When
citing articles that fall under the Public Access Policy, were authored or co-authored by the applicant and arose
from NIH support, provide the NIH Manuscript Submission reference number (e.g., NIHMS97531) or the PubMed
Central (PMC) reference number (e.g., PMCID234567) for each article. If the PMCID is not yet available because the
Journal submits articles directly to PMC on behalf of their authors, indicate "PMC Journal - In Process." A list of
these Journals is posted at: http://publicaccess.nih.gov/submit_process_journals.htm. Citations that are not
covered by the Public Access Policy, but are publicly available in a free, online format may include URLs or PMCID
numbers along with the full reference (note that copies of publicly available publications are not accepted as
appendix material.)

D. Research Support
List both selected ongoing and completed research projects for the past three years (Federal or non-Federally-
