Over the past 3 years | have been fortunate enough to record seven jazz CDs, six of which are sampled in this collection, The songs and solos chosen for this book represent a wide range of styles and performance approaches within the context of my own sound, Yes, itis my own sound, developed over years of practicing scales, arpegeios, and long notes; Tafanel and Gaubert Dally Exercises; Moyse’s De a Sororite, as well as playing Cuban charanga music for seven years in New York and Miami. There was also learning sore iV progressions and playing transcriptions of Charlie Parker's solos along with listening to other flutsts and soloists. Herbie Mann, Richard Egues (from Orquesta Aragon of Cuba), Jean Pierre Rampal, and the greatest of them al, Hubert Laws, were my strongest influences. Other notable influences were Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Tito Puente. Santana, Herbie Hancock, Nat King Cole, and especially my father, Nestor R. Torres, a brilliant musician in his ‘own right, ‘What I hope more than anything is chat his book willbe a useful rool for you to develop ‘your ovin sound as vell, based on your unique experiences and taste. Some of the solo transcriptions tray seem quite daunting Please do not be discouraged, Practice them very slowly at first ard lisen to the recording, You willnote that there are some phrases that are impossible to trarscribe literally because ofthe way I berdl and stretch the tempo. Please remember that the transcriptions are a point of reference for you to make the most ‘ofitinthe best way that suits you. [tis not about boing able to ply it exact like the record ‘or the way is written, orto sound just like Nestor Torres or anybody e’se.Itis about enjoying the process of creative discovery that only you can determine. For those of you who are still beginners, start by playing the melody ofthe songs, and if there is one phrase in my solos you ‘cause, then you have already won! | thank Jeannette Desa and especially Pete BarenBregge for keeping usall ontrack, as well as everyone involved in the making of tis book. That said, my deepest gratitude ‘and most profound respect and appreciation goto Miles Osland, who fearlessi tock ‘on the long and grueling task of putting my muse on paper. Thank you for making me part of your musical experience. Please remember, play and practice with JOY!
