MIDWEST
‘The middle of the country's economy
‘was based on farming. The Steel plow,
that was invented by loh Deere in
1837, revolutionized the farming
industry. It made farming much less
physically demanding, as well as less
manual and physically demanding
work for the farmers.’The steel plow
was needed because the ground in the
U.S. was much harder and the wood
plows wouldn't work. So Deere
created a Strong ploW that would be
capable of properly assisting farmers
in their work. Another invention
that greatly helped out the farmers
was the horse-drawn reaper, invented by
Cyrus McCormick in 1831. Not only did it
simplify the farmers’ work, but it
also produced fie times the amount of
harvesting in a day than the farmers
‘were able to prodiice when using @

TRAINS
THE U.S.
In the beginning, trains used to be
horse-drawn carriages. rom there, many
innovations and progress oceurred to
result in the trains that we use today.
Wood tratks were built so that the wheels
of the cart would remain within the
road, People realized that the wood rail
‘wore down too fast, so they put nails in
the tracks to sustain them for longer.
‘Then, the Steam train was invented in
3814 by George Stephenson. With all of
these new innovations of the train
track, by 1860, about 30,000 miles of
railroad were operating. On May 10.
41869, the Union Pacifie and the Central
Pacific railroad companies came
‘together to build the Transcontinental
ralload, spanning from New York to
California. This could be traveled in only
‘a few days with the new train, as
‘opposed to the weeks or months it used
to take with wagons or by foot
