Thank you for the opportunity to review this paper.

I recommend this paper should be accepted for publication with revisions.

This paper explores an important concept – that of patient safety and provides an interesting
summary of key concepts or factors which influence patient outcomes/ patient safety. The authors
are to be commended on their work in this important area. There is also currently a great deal of
focus on improving patient safety through consideration of what may be called ‘non-technical’ skills.
For example, communication, team-work and leadership skills.

I have made some brief comments within the paper and include comments below for the authors’
consideration.

Given the significant knowledge base that currently exists in this area, I would recommend
considering limiting the scope of the review to Indonesia. For example, the literature included in the
review must relate to patient safety in the Indonesian context. This could then be compared with
what is occurring ‘world-wide’ in the discussion section and lead to recommendations for future
research/interventions. I believe this will be of interest to an international audience. This may have
been the intention as much of the research reviewed seems to be from Indonesia but this is needs to
be clearly stated.

The authors may wish to consider expanding their key search terms to include ‘nurse’ and/or
‘hospital’ and limiting the context to ‘Indonesia’. You may also wish to consider conducting a
scoping review rather than systematic review as that will allow an exploration of current knowledge
around a topic without needing to assess the quality of the research included in the review – an
important part of a systematic review that is not evident in this abstract.

I would be interested to understand more detail about the literature search process, as I would have
expected more than 15 papers given the topic. Expanding on the inclusion and exclusion criteria will
help. A table of the literature search findings would also be beneficial. Headings may include. Date,
Database searched, keywords, number of abstracts, abstracts that met inclusion criteria.

Breaking findings into themes is a positive way of reporting the findings.

A discussion is also required. If the review focuses on Indonesian patient safety then the discussion
could situate this into a world-wide context.

The paper requires an overall review for clarity and English grammar/presentation – although the
authors are to be commended on their efforts of writing in English to date.

References also need to be reviewed to ensure all references are included in the reference list at the
end of the paper and in the correct style. The La Trobe University
http://www.lib.latrobe.edu.au/referencing-tool/ referencing tool is open access and may be
helpful.

I hope that the authors will find this review and comments helpful.

Well done on a very interesting piece of work.
