Task 1 - Long reading
Read the following text about bottle lamps and answer the 15 questions on page 7.
Paragraph 1
{n Brazil, a man called Alfredo Moser had the idea of making lamps from plastic bottles filled
with water because there were so many power cuts. He experimented with the bottles until
he could tight up the rooms in his own house during the day. The lamps didn't need electricity.
Since then, he has installed the lamps in his neighbours’ houses and the local supermarket,
but he has not made much money from his invention. instead, he has been very generous
with his idea, using open-source technology. This means that the idea is freely available for
everyone to use and change as they wish.
Paragraph 2
Moser's idea is even simpler than it sounds. A large water bottle is filled with water, and a small
amount of a common chemical is added to prevent bacteria. Moser says that the cleaner the
bottle is the better. Then a hole is made in the roof of the house, and the bottle is pushed up
through the hole, top-first. When a small part of the bottle is sticking out of the roof, it is
glued into place. What happens is that sunlight travelling through the water in the bottle is
refracted, or bent, and the light fills the room.
Paragraph 3
This idea was picked up by a man from the Philippines, illac Diaz, who founded an
organisation called MyShelter. This organisation specialises in bullding houses using recycled
materials. They'd been given an enormous number of plastic bottles, which they used in two
ways. They made walls by filing the bottles with wet earth, and created windows from bottles
filled with water. Someone realised that this idea was similar to the bottle lamps, and Diaz
decided that these would be perfect for the Philippines. MyShelter formed the Liter of Light
organisation and started making the lamps in 20. They have been making them ever since.
Paragraph 4
The technology is not owned by any large corporation, but the idea is that the technology is
shared. People who run small businesses can learn to make and install the lamps and earn
Some money in return. Liter of Light also run workshops to pass on the technology to young
People and community groups who want to install the lights. By means of this open system,
over 350,000 lamps have been installed in the Philippines, and the organisation now has
projects in 15 other countries.
Paragraph S
Since Moser’s original idea (for which some people have suggested he should get a Nobel Prize),
the technology has moved on. As the first bottle lamps only worked during daylight, 2 new
system was developed, using a bottle attached to very small solar panels and a battery. In the
Philippines, bottle lamps have saved people US $10 a month on electricity. Many spend this extra
US $10 on a night lamp. They can also be used as streetlights, which can produce six years of
light at a fraction of the cost of ordinary street lights. Like the basic version, these save a huge
amount in carbon emissions and are affordable.i

To: The Editor, Creativity Magazine
Dear Editor,
Asa satisfied graduate of The Creative Business College, T have been reflecting on my secondary school education.
Unfortunately, at school, arts subjects are not taken very seriously. When I decided that I wanted to study
Art at university, my teachers did not encourage me at all. This must change.
It would also be better if Business Studies were obligatory for students in their last few years at school. If
Td studied business when I was 16, it would have made my career as an artist much easier,
Yours,
Amina Khan
