Tener (to have)

The verb tener means, in a general sense, “to have.” Its conjugation is (tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos,
tenéis, tienen).

Using “tener” to express age

Among the many uses of tener is that of expressing someone’s age. In English, I say that I am a certain
age: I am 20 years old, I am 30, I am 16. In Spanish, however, I say that I have a certain number of
years: I have 20 years, I have 30, I have 16.
Yo Tengo treinta años. I am 30 years old.
Ella tiene quince años. She is 15.
¿Cuántos años tienes? How old are you? (Literal meaning is “How many years do
you have?”)
