Today we will be learning about multiplication of two digit by to digit numbers.

Our first problem is 24 x 13
The first step is to stack the numbers on top of each other. On the board I will be
showing the class the example.
Next we always start with multiplying the ones place. 3 x 4 = 12. We write down
the 2 in the product and regroup the 1 above the 2 in 24. Next we multiply the 3
by the 2 in the tens place and after we multiply we add the regrouped 1 to the
product. So, 3 x 2 = 6. 6 + 1 = 7. We will write the 7 next to the 2 in our product. I
will also show this to the class on the board. Now that we multiplied the 4 and 2
by 3 we need to clean house. Let's cross out the 3 and the one we regrouped.
When we clean house that makes us happy, we will put a smiley face under the 2
in our product, this helps us to remember to keep the ones place in our product.
We will then start over again and multiply the 4 by 1. 4 x 1 = 4. We do not have
any numbers to regroup so we will write 4 under the 8 in our product. I will show
this on the board. You will see the students at this time show thumbs up meaning
they understand, thumbs in the middle meaning they are a little stuck, or thumbs
down meaning they are not quite sure what we are doing to solve the problem. If
you could please do whichever one applies to you at this time it would help me to
know what you understand. Finally we will multiply 1 x 2 =2 and put the 2 next to
the 4 in the product. To finish the problem we will then add together our partial
products.
