Q.2.1

A tension member consists of an OneSteel 300Plus 125 x 75 x 12UA. Its ends are
connected to gusset plates through the 75mm leg by a row of three 30 mm bolts at 70
mm centres along the member length.

a). Refer to OneSteel 300Plus brochure on the unit website, state the yield stress and
ultimate tensile strength for the section.
b). According to AS4100 Section 7, check the member for a design tension force of 450
kN

Q.2.2

A diagonal tension member of a truss shown in Figure below supports a design tension
load of 650 kN. The element is designed with a section of OneSteel 300Plus 180PFC.
There are two 30 mm bolts and three 24mm through the web to connect the member to
a gusset plate. Determine whether the design member capacity is sufficient to carry the
design tension load or not.
