Project Proposal Document:

Raw Beauty
Alice Dunt

Overview:
My project is about the subject of raw beauty. The medium that I will be using is fine art
nude photography. I am aiming to use the human body in its true and raw form to
represent that no matter what someone looks like, they are beautiful. The main aims of
my project are to spread the message that women- and men do not have to conform to
conventional beauty standards to be beautiful. Everyone is beautiful in their own way,
no matter what their body shape is or their hair looks like, how they choose to dress, or
how they choose to decorate their bodies. No one should be judged by their
appearance.

Objectives:

● people do not have to conform to any beauty standards to be beautiful

● people should be free to express themselves however they choose
● women do not have to look or dress a certain way to be feminine
● promoting self-love

The Photos:
The photos will be taken surrounded by nature, as nature is considered beautiful in its
raw state and this will best represent that the human body and nature are equal. I am
thinking about using the theme of the elements as this would give me four different
ways to represent the human body. For distribution purposes, the photos will most likely
not show any intimate areas, i.e. nipples. I am unsure whether I will use any props for
the photos, for example I may need some small piece of fabric for covering sensitive
areas which would coincide with my theme. This could work well as a way to
incorporate my theme more into the photos.

I will probably colour grade the photos slightly to make them look even and smooth.
However I will not be editing the photos to change the appearance of the model as I
want my photos to look as real and raw as possible.

Audience:
The main target audience for my project will be women who feel as though they do not
fit into societal norms and are therefore discriminated against. This includes women
who may have tattoos, or coloured hair, or like to dress differently to how society
expects them to. However, all women may relate to my project as even though they
may dress or look how society expects women to look, they may not feel as though they
are beautiful or if they are expressing themselves in the way they want to actually
express themselves.

Equipment:
The equipment I will use for my project will consist of a Sony A6300 and a reflector. As I
am shooting outside during the day I do not need lots of equipment. I may need some
lights as well if the day we are shooting is cloudy or gloomy. I do not know which lens I
will use at the moment, but will research which lens will be best to use for the photos I
want to achieve.

Cast and Crew:

The crew for my project include myself and Grant Lywood at the time being. I am taking
the roles of producer and director, and Grant will be the photographer. As I want to
develop my skills as a director, I thought it would be best to focus on that and have an
external person take the photographs. I may need an extra person to hold the reflector
or set up the lights.

I am hoping to find an external female model who will be willing to be photographed

nude in outside locations. However if I cannot find a model, I am willing to be the model
myself. This will mean I will have to direct myself on how I want the model to pose and
hand some of the direction to Grant as he will be taking the photos.

Location:
The locations I am going to use will reflect the theme of my project. I am going to shoot
in outside locations which represent each element. I am unsure whether I will use
several different locations, or just one location but in different ways. When choosing a
location I will need to consider the issue of public nudity and preferably find somewhere
that is excluded from the public eye.

Budget:
The budget for my project will be all my own money. The things I will need to pay for is
petrol to the locations for my car, and any props I wish to use for my photographs.
When I know where my locations will be, I can work out the cost of the petrol. I will
probably use something I already own for the props if I decide to use any. I may also
need to pay for the models transport from wherever she lives to Carlisle. I will also need
to consider the costs of some food depending how long the shoots go on for, as I could
either split the shoots into different days, or have one continuous day of shooting.

Potential issues:
● Weather
● Model
● Location
● Public nudity

There are a few potential issues that I may come across. As my shoots are outside, the
first of these is the weather. I will need to schedule my shoots for days which it is not
likely to rain and this will require me to keep up to date with the weather forecast. If it is
scheduled to rain for the entirety of the time I have scheduled for shooting days, I will
need a backup location.
Another potential issue is that if I use an external model, I need to consider the
possibility that she may not show up or may cancel at the last minute. Therefore having
an alternative in case this happens is vital.
The last issue may be the locations. I will need to consider the possibility that I may not
be able to use the locations I would like to and will need to be careful with my selection.
Therefore using public locations that I do not need permission for may be a better idea.
I will need to research about the rules of public nudity and what this entails if I am going
to shoot outside. Finding a location excluded from the public will be ideal, but I need to
consider the possibility of being seen by the public and what might happen.

Distribution:
The distribution for my project will be on social media through the app Instagram. I think
this will be the best way for a large audience to see my pictures. I can somewhat
influence who will see the photos by using certain hashtags that appeal to women of my
age and mindset. I am going to research the use of hashtags on Instagram and compile
a list of hashtags that will help my photos receive a certain audience.
