Research has shown that binge eating disorder is the most common eating

disorder, where 3.5% of women and 2.0% of men will have binge eating
disorder during their life
● This makes BED more than three times more common than anorexia
and bulimia combined.
● BED is also more common than breast cancer, HIV, and
schizophrenia.
Research estimates that
● 2.8% of American adults suffer from binge eating disorder in their
lifetime.
● 3/10 individuals looking for weight loss treatments show signs of BED.
● Approximately half of the risk for BED is genetic.
● Nearly half of BED patients have a comorbid mood disorder.
● More than half of BED patients have comorbid anxiety disorders.
● Binge eating or loss-of-control eating may be as high as 25% in post-
bariatric patients.

BED was adopted as a formal diagnosis with DSM criteria in 2013


● Not only is there more awareness around the disorder, but there are
also more doctors trained in the treatment of binge eating disorder.
This has made it easier for people to receive treatment.
● 28.4% of people with current BED are receiving treatment for their
disorder
● 43.6% of people with BED at some point in their lives will receive
treatment
