Close Reading Procedures
1. Read and think on your own

2. Circle any important vocabulary words

3. Write the key words or big ideas in the margins of the text

a. In a Fiction Story: setting, character traits, problem, solution, important events

b. In a Nonfiction Article: main ideas, key events

4. Underline evidence of your big ideas - key details, ideas, facts, events, etc.

5. Talk with a partner about the text


Multiple Choice Strategies
1. Think - What type of question is it (Power Words)
a. Context Clues, Compare/Contrast, Main Idea, Prediction, etc.

2. Cover the choices and answer on your own first. Look for an answer that is
most similar to yours.

3. Eliminate 2 choices.
a. True/False, “always” or “never”, irrelevant options
Short Answer Response Strategies
1. Read the questions first - 2 point questions AND essay question

2. Read with purpose - write down key things to look for as you read (from the
questions)

3. Make margin notes - answers to the questions!

4. Underline details that will support your answers to the questions.
