Title of Lesson: Introduction to Chapter 9

Overview of Lesson: Students have just finished their Chapter 8 assessment and are beginning to learn
about the expansion of America through the Louisiana Purchase. Students will also learn about the
concept of Judicial Review and how this concept is still begin used today to reverse decisions that have
been deemed unconstitutional.

Standards:
8.3 Students understand the foundation of the American political system and the ways in which
citizens participate in it.
Enumerate the advantages of a common market among the states as foreseen in and protected by the
Constitution’s clauses on interstate commerce, common coinage, and full-faith and credit.

Overview:
1. Students will get into groups of 6-8
a. In their groups, students will be given a sheet to be filled out
b. They will be given 5 terms to fill out

2. Groups will have two minutes to complete the first term


a. There will be six total terms
b. Students will be asked to list everything that they know about the given term
c. They will also have to list any questions that they may have about that specific term

3. Each group will then share out what they know


a. Students will then discuss everything that was written on the board
b. Students will repeat that same process five (5) more times

Learning Objective:
Students will be able to identify everything that they know about a specific term related to the
upcoming chapter by talking, writing and discussing as a group everything they know or think that they
know.

*Special Populations*
Those students that are shy about speaking can discuss what they are thinking in small groups before
sharing out to a larger group. Those students that are not afraid to discuss in front of others are able to
do so when we share out to the whole class.
