Manning Formula

V = (K/n) R2/3S1/2

K = 1.49 for imp units, 1 for SI units

V = VELOCITY

R = HYDRAULIC RADIUS = A/P

S = GRADIENT SLOP = 0.0033

n = ROUGHNESS = 0.011 (Table 4-1)

Where A & P are found in the below equation#2 & 3 and replaced at equation#4

A = D2/4 (α – sin (2α / 2) Cross sectional area of pipe (equation 2)

P = αD Wetted area of pipe (equation 3)

D = Diameter of pipe

α = cos-1 (1 – h/r)

h = 0.7D (was considered on the basis of maximum flow should not be

more than 70% of the pipe diameter)

Accordingly for 12” pipe

12” = 0.305 m

h = 0.21

α = cos-1 (1 – 0.21/0.1525)

α = cos-1 (-0.38) (Radians)

α = 1.18

A = (0.305)2/4 (1.18 - sin (2(1.18) / 2)

A = 0.093 / 4 (1.18 – sin (1.18))

A = 0.093 / 4 (1.18 – 0.924)

A = 0.093 / 4 (0.26)

A = 0.093 / 1.04

A = 0.09 m2
P = αD

P = 1.18 (0.305)

P = 0.36 m2

R = A/P (equation 4)

R = 0.09 / 0.36

R = 0.25

Replace the unknown factors in manning equation #5

V = (K/n) R2/3S1/2

R = 0.25

S = 0.0033

n = 0.011

V = (1 / 0.011) (0.25)0.67 (0.0033)0.5

V = 90.91 (0.395) (0.033)

V = 1.185 m/s

Finally

Q = V.A

Q = 1.185 x 0.09

Q = 0.106 m3/s

Q = 106 l/s
