Coit is an elementary school located in the Grand Rapids Public Schools, and includes a diverse, urban student population. Coit is also in the process of implementing the International Baccalaureate Primary Year Program. Olivia has demonstrated a wide variety of effective teaching skills during her student teaching experience at Coit Elementary. She worked collaboratively with her supervising teacher to establish and maintain a classroom environment that was orderly and allowed students to stay on task and engaged in learning, The use of multiple verbal and non-verbal cues were used to maximize time on task and facilitate effective transitions. Directions and procedures were clear and understood by all students. Olivia's lesson plans were always detailed and speci , and included all essential elements of effective lesson design. To help students stay engaged during lessons, she used a variety of strategies and learning experiences that included small groups, partner talk, turn and talk, formative assessment, and a variety of models and examples to help students understand the given content. She has also actively integrated the use of video and other visual and auditory content to help engage students. During a writing lesson using adjectives, she began the lesson with an “I spy” activity to help students get excited about the lesson. She then used this format to scaffold students” guided and independent writing For her three lesson “Instructional Plan,” Olivia focused on social studies, with students learning to tell the difference between rights and responsibilities. During one observed lesson, students were engaged through the use of a video, ‘turn/ialk, echo reading, a physical movement “brain break” and working with a partner. She also followed up and differentiated the lesson with additional small group instruction for some students, Her post assessment results showed scores approximately 50% higher than the pre assessment, evidencing effective lesson planning and delivery. Throughout her student teaching experience, Olivia demonstrated a strong work ethic, and a determination to be an effective teacher. During feedback sessions following a lesson, she actively sought input to improve her craft and used it to enhance her practice. She has a strong desire to be the very best teacher she can be, and this will serve her well as she moves forward in the profession. Olivia has demonstrated effective teaching skills and she is an excellent candidate for any teaching position she chooses to pursue.
