Rosa Parks: Meet a Civil Rights Hero
pages 24-26

On page 24 it says, “As a protest, they planned to boycott all

the buses in Montgomery.” Boycott means to stop using
something. The boycott would make bus companies lose
money.

Do you think the boycott will work? Will people change the
laws if the bus companies lose money? _________

Why or why not? ___________________________________

Page 25 says “thousands of flyers were printed.” Flyers in this

sentence means pieces of paper. Sketch a flyer below that
asks people to stop riding buses. (Hint: The first paragraph on
page 25 can give you ideas about what to write.)
On page 25, Dr. Kings talks about justice. Justice means
making something fair. What do you think Dr. King meant
when he said it was time “to gain justice on the buses in this
city”?
(Hint: Think, were the buses fair? What could change?)

On Monday, December 5th, 1955, the boycott began. Draw a

picture of people boycotting the buses.
(Look at the top of page 26 for ideas of what to draw.)
The Supreme Court is the most important place laws are
decided. People argued about the segregation laws in the
Supreme Court because other courts could not decide who
was right.

What did the Supreme Court decide about Alabama’s

segregation laws? (Hint: look at the bottom of page 26.)

Remember that good readers make predictions when they read

but those predictions do not have to be correct!

Write at least one question you still have about the boycott.
