NARCAN BEYOND
CAMPUS
Narcan, also known as Naloxone, is a
drug used to treat a narcotic overdose in
an emergency situation. The medication
temporarily reverses the effects of an
overdose.
Background
A high percentage of South Philadelphia
and Temple University's Main Campus's
populations are overdosing from narcotics.
There has been an increase in overdose
deaths throughout the years 2014-2015.
Advocacy Efforts
Narcan is an over the counter drug and can
be purchased at most pharmacies without a
prescription. Some individuals carry it with
them incase of an emergency situation.
Current Initiatives
Locations like the Rite Aid and CVS on
Broad Street offer Narcan for purchase. In
Kensington, a nonprofit organization called
Prevention Point also offers Narcan kits for
individuals.
Possible Challenges
Not all individuals carry Narcan and even
those that do, some may not administer it
when needed. Some situations may also call
for a second dose and medical care is often
needed after an initial dose.
Progress and Getting Involved
Temple University's Student Government
offers training sessions where students can
go and get trained for administering Narcan.
Students can get involved by attending
available sessions.
