Problem: Limited Blood Vessel Scope

“Surgeons and patients would benefit from a device that detects vessels while
using electrosurgical pencils during minimally invasive surgeries.”

We will deliver an electrosurgical pencil attachment that:

Produces an auditory signal
Can be sterilizable and used in the operating room
Detects vessels within 5 mm of the surgical plane

Metric Test

Minimum Pulse =>50 Phantom vessel at different pulse

Rate speeds

Added Time [to No time when compared to Compare time taken to use a
procedure] ultrasound use concurrently with standard B-mode ultrasound
ES pencil procedures vs. doppler attachment
to dissect a length of tissue

Applicable Lower than artery occlusion upper Force transducer test

Figure:

(A) Phantom vessel set-up. Using a

syringe, we pushed blood mimicking
fluid (mixture of water, oil, and salt)
through a vessel (catheter)
embedded in a model tissue (tofu).
The fetal Doppler system detected
fluid flow through the vessel,
registering 123-127 bpm.

(B) The Vevo LAZR ultrasound

system identified the location of the
phantom vessel (18 mm below the
surface) and could detect fluid
movement.

Specification Test

Ease of Use Evaluation form for Barnes Jewish surgeons.

Max Depth In Vitro: set model vessels at different depths to

Detection ensure 5 mm limit.

In Vivo: Future testing validating that blood flow is only

detected within 5 mm of patient’s tissue surface.

Temporal Moving the probe across phantom tissue to determine

Resolution max speed the device can be moved and still detect
blood flow.

Spatial Place multiple phantom vessels in our tissue and

Resolution measure precision of device.

Specification Test

Added Time Time two groups of surgeons, one using our device, the other using conventional methods.

Applicable Pressure Measure (using force transducer) lowest pressure to generate a reading, and the highest pressure
before arterial occlusion.

Minimum Pulse Current phantom model is not perfectly cyclic, so minimum pulse detection is inaccurate. Future
Detection testing with a successful doppler system should detect heart rates above 50 bpm..

Sterilization N/A; The material used for the probe and doppler system must be sealable and able to undergo
chemical treatment (alcohol).
