informed about the Tower. For the next couple of months, she will be the voice between Boldt and the
student body.

When we think of alumni, the first people who come to mind are those who were our friends and have
since graduated. But we often forget that we are surrounded by alumni every day because we don’t
think of the faculty and staff members who were once Carthage students. I reached out to ask them to
recall their living experiences while attending school here, and to get their feedback about the newest
addition to our campus.

If you are a faculty member who attended Carthage and would like to answer these questions for
round two, please feel free to email me !

“Siebert Chapel was being built while I was a student here. Prior to its
completion, we worshiped in Wartburg Auditorium and weekly chapel was
required. Attendance was taken.”

Did you live in the dorms? If so, did you enjoy it and what was the building
like?

“I lived in Denhart for three years (I spent my junior year studying in Germany),
which was an all-female residence hall. Each floor was named. Freshman year, I lived on the Hooter
floor — owl-themed, of course! It has a strong sense of community and large groups of girls would
dine together or attend campus events. Typically, only a couple of girls would have a TV on the entire
floor, but we all had popcorn poppers, hot pots, hair dryers, stereos, and an electric typewriter if they
were lucky. Two pay phones were located on each floor — one in the middle and one on the end of
the hall, and you always hoped that you had a room as far away as possible from those phones so you
wouldn’t have to answer or take messages.”

What kind of reactions have you heard from students about the Tower?

“Excitement seems to be looming, with chatter about the kitchens and kitchenettes.”

Peter Dennee ’86

Associate Professor of Music, Coordinator of Music Education

Was there are major construction being done while you were attending
school here?

“I was a student at Carthage from fall 1982 through May 1986. There was no
new construction on campus while I was a student.”

Did you live in the dorms? If so, did you enjoy it and what was the building like?

“I lived in Johnson my first year and on the first floor of Denhart from my sophomore through senior
years. I did enjoy my time in the dorms. I made some close friendships that have endured. Our room
was always unlocked, and friends were always welcome to hang out there. I don’t think Denhart has
changed much.”

Was there major construction being done while you were attending school
here?

“The softball field was put in on campus. (Not much!)”

Did you live in the dorms? If so, did you enjoy it and what was the building
like?

“Yes I did. I lived in Madrigrano for three years and then lived off campus my senior year. I did enjoy
my time in the dorms. The building has not changed a ton, but it has been renovated.”

What kind of reactions have you heard from students about the Tower?

“The students and the prospective students seem to be excited about the building, especially the new
open spaces that will be offered.”

Was there major construction being done while you were attending school
here?

“Yes, when I was a student here, the library and TARC were the major projects
that were completed.”

Did you live in the dorms? If so, did you enjoy it and what was the building
like?

“I lived in Johnson. The building hasn’t really changed at all. I think some small updates have been
done, but overall it looks the same.”

What kind of reactions have you heard from students about the Tower?

“Students seem excited about the new building, because it gives them another living option besides
The Oaks and the campus apartments.”

here?

“I don’t believe so, I was here from 2004 to 2008.”

Did you live in the dorms? If so, did you enjoy it and what was the building
like?

“Yes, I lived in Johnson for three years — two on the AXO floor. LOVED IT. Same as it is now”

What kind of reactions have you heard from students about the Tower?

“I really haven’t heard that much. I hear some complaining about the noise in the morning, but
beyond that, not much.”

Daniel Dick ’13

Director of Carthage Fund

Was there major construction being done while you were attending school
here?

“The Union had JUST been finished before I transferred to Carthage and the
final two Oaks buildings were being completed my junior year.”

Did you live in the dorms? If so, did you enjoy it and what was the building
like?

“I lived in The Oaks for one year. I loved the personal space I had and the nice amenities The Oaks
suites offer, but I wish I could have enjoyed more community on campus that traditional dorms or the
Tower will be able to offer.”

What kind of reactions have you heard from students about the Tower?

“Aside from the construction being a great alarm clock, I have heard anticipation from students to
have this new space available.”

John Shearer ’16

Assistant Director for Advancement

Was there major construction being done while you were attending school
here?

“Yes, during my sophomore year, the new Science Center was being built.”

Did you live in the dorms? If so, did you enjoy if and what was the building
like?

“I lived in Denhart, Johnson, and Madrigrano. As far as dorm living goes, I did not mind the
buildings. I enjoyed living in Madrigrano the most, because I was able to reserve one of the rooms
that is bigger than the others.”

“Some are really excited to hopefully get the opportunity to live in it when it’s open. Some of the
seniors I have spoken to are upset that they will not have the opportunity to live there.”
