PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
There are three main types of partial differential equations.
| PARABOLIC: first order derivative in one variable, second order derivative in others for example diffusion and the time dependent Schroedinger equation.
2. ELLIPTIC: second order dertvatives in al variables, but with the same signs for example Poisson, time independent Schroedinger equation
3. HYPERBOLIC: second order derivatives in all variables, but with different signs, for example the wave equations.
For this topic the best reference fs Koonin, chapters 6 and 7, We will deal mainly with chapter 7, concerning parabolic diferential equations. Other good references
include numerical recipes, and ~ Computational methods in Physics and Engineering", by S. Wong.
Lets ook at examples of parabolic RD. Es.
The diffusion equation:
oe
== dD tS 1
Fe = V(DVS) + a)
where D is the diffusion constant and S$ is
a source function, and the time-dependent
Schroedinger equation:
—n? 2.
nF, = am VO (2)
A simple method to solve these will now be shown,
Example: fusion with ¢unlform diffusion constant for 0
