Manipulative Ad

Lucky strike tobacco ads in the 1950s depicted how the tobacco can give happiness to its user.

But it was proven scientifically otherwise. Tobacco or cigarette has addictive effect to its user and was

also creating higher risk for cancer. “Be Happy-Go Lucky” was the motto used by the Lucky Strike; it

was so misleading that a cigarette could give happiness or perhaps lucks. Lucky Strike also promote

women to smoke which a campaign to increase their sale, it was also believe that women that smoke have

more bad effect than the men. Lucky Strike brand has created claims that have no support whatsoever,

thus making this ad manipulative.

Civil and Effective Ad

Rowntree’s Fruit Gums ad, have a highly direct means to the subject/customer. “You can taste the

fruit” and “Long Lasting” was the motto used by Rowntree’s Fruit Gums to advertise their product. The

point of this ad was to convince people to buy their product, surely the taste of Rowntree’s Fruit Gums

didn’t came from a natural fruit, but it has made their point right as they didn’t claim it to be natural.

Therefore Rowntree’s Fruit Gums is a civil and effective ad.
