FS Session # __3____ Grade Level______ Name:

Teaching Point: Mathematicians use multiple strategies to solve problems.

Problem: Problem Type:
4 children want to share 10 submarine Equal Sharing
sandwiches so that everyone gets the same
amount. How much can each child have?

Rationale for choosing this problem:

Students need more work understanding and solving equal share problems.

Differentiation:
Content (2,10) (4,12) (4, 15) (5,12) (4, 2) (12,4) (9,6)
Process May use paper or other materials as manipulatives, draw pictures
Product Students will record their thinking on paper
Launch (Making sure students understand the task):
Before distributing the problem, read it aloud and ask student to recall information.
Show a picture or describe a submarine sandwich.
Perhaps model (2, 10) first as an example.
Independent Work: (While you are observing students, what questions might you pose to
advance their learning?)
Pay close attention to their work. Is anyone shutting down? How do I move them forward?
Is it the same student(s) as last week? Offer words of encouragement and ask questions as
opposed to telling them what to do.
Sharing Out:

Ask each person to share their solution. Look for and discuss different strategies. Refer back
to the teaching point.
