Static Mixer Temperature

Hands on – Problem Definition

Consider two input water streams A

and one output stream on a Mixer
Tank . B T = 20°C

The Temperatures of the input

streams are fixed. T = 90°C

The goal for this system is to

get a product with T = 62°C and
the biggest output flow.

The mass flow of the input C

What are the values of the flow rates of
streams can be modified by the input streams to reach the objective?
use of valves, in order to get
OPTIMIZATION
differents flow rates and
temperatures at the outlet.
Hands on – Parameters

Inputs:
• Flow Rate of Component A (1 - 100 kg/h)
• Flow Rate of Component B (1 - 100 kg/h)

Solver:
Aspen Plus

Output:
• Outlet Temperature
• Outlet Flow

Objectives:
• Max Outlet Flow It’s a way to specify that
• Min (Outlet Temperature - 62) the Temperature at oulet
should be 62°C.
Hands on – Solver

Aspen Plus® is used to calculate the

material and energy balances of this
system.

Block: Static Mixer

Setup
Hands on – Coupling

The simplest way to couple Aspen with modeFRONTIER is running in

a DOS Batch Node the following command line:

"C:\Arquivos de programas\AspenTech\Aspen Plus V8.0\Engine\Xeq\aspen.exe" input /getridof

1 2 3

1. Calls the executable file of Aspen.

2. Input file that contains all the setup of the case (.inp).
3. Command that generate an output file (.out) containing the results.
Hands on – Input File

The input file also called Input Summary has extension .inp, and it
contains all the data neccesary to run a case.

This file can be generated by selecting Input Summary in the graphic

interface or using the keyboard command: Ctrl + Alt + I .
Hands on – Output File

The output file has extension .out, and it contains input, solver and
results data. Below is shown the lines containing some results:
Hands on – Output File

It’s necessary to have a model of this file, in order to copy to the Output
Template Node of modeFRONTIER.
1. Right click on any place of the folder where the input file is located,
and select “Open enhanced console here”.
2. Type the same line command of the DOS Batch Script (Slide 5),
and press “enter”.

This operation will create in this directory a file .out with

the same name of the input file
