The 20th Century was a Century of non-violent revolutions

- Sexual Revolution, Women’s liberation, Scientific revolution, etc.

Scientific Revolution gave us x-rays, radioactivity, sub-atomic particles, relativity, quantum

theory.

- Telephone, radio, internet


- Laboratory based science reshaped medicine.
o Antibiotics
o Contraceptives

Extreme population growth, between 1900 to 2000: from 1.6 billion to 6 billion

Turn of the century introduced genocide

- The first concentration camps


- The bloodiest century in human history
- WWI, WWII, Cold War
o Machine guns, tanks, planes, poison gas, firebombs, nuclear weapons, all

developed in this century

A Century of the Yong and Women

- New vocabulary: adolescence, dating, teenager


- Education passed elementary school was the norm
- Women could vote in 4 states by 1900
Despite the Great Depression, the 20th century was A Century of Prosperity

- GDP was 7 times higher in 1999 than 1900


- Wages increased
- Home ownership increased
