1. McKinley feared that other nations would seize the Philippines before him.

a. Fighting began on February 4, 1899

i. Fillipinos used Guerilla warfare

ii. Americans Burned villages

iii. “It may be necessary to kill half the Filipinos…” – American General William Shafter

b. Officially declared over, July 1902

i. Fighting still continued

c. This war convinced U.S. not to seize territory

2. In 1904, Germany wanted a port in Santo Domingo, Roosevelt said no and enforced the Monroe Doctrine

a. Roosevelt Corollary to Monroe Doctrine:

i. The U.S. can become an international police force.

b. 20 different times, the U.S. stepped in overseas to enforce the Monroe Doctrine.

i. Pattern: Intervene, restore order, get involved with political disputes, train and fund

police, military, hold elections

3. Woodrow Wilson was afraid that Germany would occupy Haiti, threatening Panama Canal

a. U.S. troops sent to Haiti

i. Took over political and economic realms

ii. Infrastructure (unpaved, using forced labor)

iii. New Government, forced to adopt a new constitution favoring U.S. interest

b. Charlemagne Peralte launched a guerilla war against U.S. troops against forced labor

i. Killed by U.S. marines

ii. U.S. marines killed more than 2,200 Haitians

iii. December 1929, Marines fired at protester and killed 12 Haitians + injured many more

iv. New form of imperialism
