World War I eventually led to the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, WWII, The Holocaust, the

Atomic Bomb, the Great Depression, The Cold War

WWI was the largest and most expensive war of all time

- 9 million soldiers killed

- 5 million civilians killed

- 28 nations

- $186 billion direct costs

- another $150 billion in indirect costs

- First war to use airplanes, tanks, long range artillery, submarines, poison gas

Led to the downfall of four monarchies:

- Russia, Austri-Hungary, Germany, Turkey

- Saw the rise of the Bolsheviks in Russia, and Fascists in Italy

Bolstered United States economy, disrupted European economies
