8. The politician will do anything to sway a vote in his favour.
9. The students derived a great benefit from their stay in France.
10. Despite opposition from the parents, the girl persisted in going out with her new
boyfriend.

III. A career adviser at a university has been asked for help in finding a job by four arts
graduates. Firms and other organisations often inform her about vacancies to be filled and she
then recommends suitable and interested students. The following four jobs are available at
present:
a. A suitable person to train as a reporter on a well-known newspaper. Good
promotion opportunities with possibility of later international assignments.
b. An assistant in the university library with excellent promotion possibilities after
specialized training
c. A junior assistant lecturer in literature in an overseas university
d. A highly- paid secretary to a famous author, well-known for his bad temper

The four students involved as possible candidates may be described as follows:


1. Barry Green is of average academic ability. He is engaged to be married. He has spent
two vacations working in his father’s office and has computing skills, easy to get on
with, lacking imagination but reliable and sensible.
2. Edward Bedford is rather capable than brilliant. Unmarried. Adaptable, sociable and
interested in people and places. Expresses his ideas effectively.
3. Helen Plummer is clever and with wide interests. Very adaptable. Unmarried.
Energetic, original, self confident, ambitious though somewhat impatient and critical.
4. Chris Johnson has excellent examination results. Married but with no children.
Extremely capable in research study. High concentration and an orderly mind. A
reserved person of somewhat marrow interests.

Having considered the matter carefully, the careers adviser makes suitable recommendations
in a report. Write your awn report expressing personal motivated recommendations, after
matching the four jobs with the four students, according to their skills, studies and training.
