Curley, Jeri. “How Does Deforestation Affect the Air?” Sciencing, 9 Mar. 2018,

www.sciencing.com/deforestation-affect-air-10632.html.

Jeri Curley discusses the complications associated with deforestation and air quality.

Curley provides you with an image of statistical information regarding how many forests and

trees are cut down each year. Roughly 40 to 50 million trees are cut down each year. Jeri

provides you with an example of how trees affect the air chemically and how they are important

to the health of our ecosystem. “It is estimated that one acre of trees in urban forests can produce

enough oxygen for eight people and remove 188 pounds of carbon dioxide from the air.” Curley

explains the importance of forests and their cooling properties to the land. The trees reflect 12 to

15 percent of UV radiation from the sun. This keeps the ground cooled and moisturized for

vegetation and growth on land. It is estimated that trees in tropical rainforests lower the

temperature by 3.6 to 6.3 degrees Fahrenheit. In the past century, the average temperature around

the world has increased by 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Using information provided by Curley I could argue the effects of deforestation on global

warming. If we could decrease deforestation in tropical regions around the world we can

decrease the Earth’s atmosphere temperature and in turn help create more oxygen and less
carbon dioxide in our air quality. People could argue the effects of global warming and say

cutting down trees doesn’t affect our air quality as much as industrialization. This argument isn’t

true due to the extremities of all the carbon dioxide humans are creating. In addition, cutting

down the trees and rainforests on the earth is only warming our atmosphere at a faster rate. The

pollution that affects global warming is created by fires, engines, and other kinds of gas powered

appliances such as generators. There are only so many trees on earth with an increasing amount

of human population. We need to make a change fast or we may have an apocalyptic future.
