This is an example of blue to purple shale deposited as silt and mud over 700 million years ago.

These are mud crack samples, once laid flat, have been vertically uplifted to create this unique rock wall.
As huge glaciers slid down the mountain, a large variety of rock types were pushed to the edges of what is now Reynold’s Flat.

Reynold’s Flat is a huge interest for geologists due to its history of glacial activity.
Compressed limestone, also referred to as Mississippian Marble, covers much of the rock face as you progress up the canyon.

These samples are just some of the more common rock types and minerals found in the Big Cottonwood Canyon.
