====Art and Design: Games and Playable Media, B.A.====

The Art and Design: Games and Playable Media (GPM) BA degree at UCSC focuses on
the creation of novel game systems as a form of artistic expression. It is
dedicated to combining theory and practice of game design, game studies and game
media construction, with an eye towards making new experiences in this emerging
and influential medium. Students in this new program will work with students in
the Computer Science: Computer Game Design (CGD) BS from foundation courses
through a year-long capstone sequence that results in team creation of a
releasable game. Students will receive a degree focused on the design of game
systems and other interactive experiences, including their connection to a wider
arts context--and a full grounding in the fundamentals of artistic practice and
expressive game development.

Art and Design: Games and Playable Media Qualification Policy
Junior transfer students are encouraged to complete all general education
requirements prior to transfer. Students should complete the following
requirements before coming to UCSC:
-Computational Foundations (CMPS 5J and 11 or CMPS 12A/L or CMPE 13/L; and CMPS
12B/M)
-Arts elective
-History of Art and Visual Culture (Modern art, 1900 or later)

All junior transfer students must pass a highly competitive portfolio review
prior to attending UCSC. The mechanism for acceptance to the degree program is
to develop a comprehensive proposal packet including an application form, a
portfolio, unofficial transcript(s), and an artist's statement, with optional
letters of recommendation. Transfer students must identify themselves as
potential Games and Playable Media majors on the UC application for admission in
order to receive information on the portfolio review deadlines and the materials
required for the review. We do not admit transfer students mid-year; students
must enter in the fall of their junior year. Junior transfer students are
encouraged to complete all general education requirements prior to transfer.
