For my small group activity, my clinical teacher suggested that I complete a read aloud

passage and corresponding questions with a group of students. In second grade, students are still

learning to read and some are below grade level. At this point in the year, students are getting

prepared for third grade where their first EOGs occur so any chance to read a passage and

answer questions is helpful. My clinical teacher also gave me the opportunity to pick the passage

that the students were going to complete. I chose a passage about Spring because it wasn’t bias

towards any gender and it’s something that is happening around them at this very second.

I worked with a group of five students at a table during literacy rotations in my

classroom. I had the students read aloud the entire passage, alternating every paragraph. At the

end of the passage, we went through and read the questions together. We numbered the

paragraphs we needed to pay extra attention to and highlighted key words or phrases in the

question. I then instructed the students to go back and re-read the passage independently and then

answer the questions. Following their completion, we went through the questions and discussed

our answers. If a student volunteered their answer, I would prompt them to explain or give

support for their answer.

The group of students I had in this group were all right at grade level with the reading

levels. One student got all 8 questions correctly, three students missed one, and two missed two

questions. By going question by question and parsing through the answers, by the end of the

rotation, all of the students knew why they did or didn’t get the answer correctly.
