This document is a critical writing assignment submitted by Duaa Arshed. It summarizes the speaker's observations of Bessie's singing and changes in her voice. The speaker notes that Bessie's voice still sounds sweet, but detects an indescribable sadness in its melody. Sometimes when singing softly, her refrain of "a long time ago" takes on the cadence of a funeral hymn. As the speaker listens closely, they realize Bessie seems unaware of this change in her own voice, which the speaker attributes to past incidents affecting their perception.

Submitted By: Duaa Arshed Reference Number: FA17-BAR-020 Date: February 23, 2018 She never knew how to hide her internal feelings. She was one of the purest soul on Earth , ones who are so innocent by nature that they couldn’t lie. Her love , anger , irritation, hatred , joy , and even sadness had their own taste in her voice . One could understand her unspoken words just by the depth of her voice. I had often heard the song before, and always with lively delight;for Bessie had a sweet voice-at least, I thought so. But now, though her voice was still sweet , I found in its melody an indescribable sadness.Sometimes , preoccupied with her work , she sang the refrain very low , very lingerly : ‘a long time ago’ came out like the saddest cadence of a funeral hymn. As I kept listening to her voice, I found out that this was something even she was unaware of. I guess so , my love for her has grown to such an extent where she thinks that she is gay but I know that she is not- or maybe its because I am more affected by the incidents happened in the past few years that sometimes, or most of the times I see and feel things that are not even there in the first place.
