Jaguar Land Rover North America Service Diagnostics urges all SDD users to become familiar with this
advanced diagnostic aid for all vehicles equipped with Second Generation Smart Key technology.

Overview: The service function titled “Security - Smart Key Health Check” is a very comprehensive and
interactive aid to quickly verify the status of the vehicle’s smart key system.

This application can reliably verify many important details about this system.

• RF antenna functionality (receive data from keys)

• Key/Transmitters (send data from keys)
• LF antenna in center console (trigger keys to transmit data for passive starting)
• Key status ( programmed, not programmed, programed to another vehicle)
• Key Battery (state of charge)

This service function application can be found in one of several places within SDD for the vehicles that
are supported.

• On the recommendations list within a PDI session type

• On the recommendations list within a Service Functions session type.
• On the Service Functions tab within a Diagnostic session type.

Once launched, this application includes suitable on-screen help text and test results including a
graphical format that is user friendly. To obtain the greatest benefit using this diagnostic aid, please be
aware of the following undocumented facts and tips.

 This application can ONLY be used when the Keyless Vehicle Module / Remote Function
Actuator (KVM or RFA) is 100% Fault Free with 0 DTC’s stored. This includes B10A9-00 "less than
2 keys programmed", so it’s very important to use this application to diagnose the Smart Key
system BEFORE using any functions that will erase keys from the KVM or making changes to the
vehicle in other systems that could trigger a DTC in the KVM.
 When you have a vehicle that is not responding to keys, etc and is not setting any DTC’s, it can
be difficult to determine if there is a problem with the keys or a problem with the RF antenna.
Because this new application can report seeing keys currently programmed to another vehicle,
technicians can use a known good key from a second vehicle of the same specification when
using this application. If the test results detect a known good key from a second vehicle, then
that result indicates the RF antenna, KVM and connecting circuits etc are working. If the test
results indicate the vehicle cannot detect a known good key from a second vehicle, then the
diagnosis should immediately shift to the vehicle’s RF antenna and circuits etc
 The Smart Key Health Check test results will include a reference to the numeric slot associated
with each key detected. It can be useful to label keys during testing with the slot number
reported to help ensure you do not discard / delete / erase the wrong keys etc. It also helps
technicians understand if all programmed keys are currently present for this service visit. This
can avoid a “no fault found” result because you are not testing all the keys currently in use, or
avoid erasing a customer’s key not present without your knowledge.

Smart Key Health Check (SKHC) interactive key test results explained.

When using the SKHC application, SDD will guide techs through an interactive process. After selecitng
the number of keys to be evaluated, SDD will prompt to test each key in turn. For each key there will be
two prompts. First will be the instructions to have the key ready, and how to perform the test correctly
with the unlock button etc. After that first prompt is dismissed, SDD will display the next prompt with a
simple instruction to press the unlock button. After the user completes this action and dismisses the
second prompt, one of three possible results for that single key will be obtained as seen below.

1) When the key being tested is recognized as a

correclty programmed key for this vehicle, a
graphic display will show the results.

The graphic display includes assigned key slot for

that key, key fob battery status, and key fob
locked status. (when correctly programmed a
key will be locked to that vehicle so it cannot be
overwitten accidentally without first completing
a recovery)

NOTE: to help keep track of keys that have

passed their test, it helps to tag them with the
key number the KVM has assigned to it as per
this screen.
2) When the key being tested is transmistting
data that does not match any of the existing
keys currently programmed to this vehicle, SDD
will display a suitable message along with the
basic info about keyfob status.

NOTE: when this result is displayed, it is not

possible to detemine if this key is already
programmed to another vehicle, or if it’s a
blank/virgin key.

However, if the “Key Fob Locked Status” is

“green” its reasonable to assume it is already
fully programmed to another vehicle.

If its “red”, then it may be a blank key, or one

that was not properly locked down after being
programmed.

3) when the KVM (a.k.a. RFA) does not see ANY

key data being transmitted during these
interactive tests, SDD will pause on a blank
window for a short while before moving on to
the next key. (or final results when it’s the last
key being tested)

When a specific single key test does not produce

results #1 or #2, this could could be a problem
with either the key or the vehicle’s components
and wiring etc.

If other keys have been detected, then its most

likely a single key problem.

If none of the keys tested produce results #1 or

#2, then the vehicle’s components and wiring
related to KVM and RF antenna should be
investigated.

TIP: A known good key from another vehicle

should be used to confirm if this vehicle can
receive and effectively process RF signals by
generating result #2.
Key Health Check Summary Screen:

After all keys have been tested, SDD will display

a summary of results including all facts known
about all keys within this vehicles’s KVM (RFA).

Here we can see there are only 2 keys currently

programmed to this KVM, and only Key #1 was
verifed during this test.

NOTE: Key slot numbers are relative to the KVM

data and NOT the sequence in which keys were
tested.

Final notes:

Two circumstances that will block access to these interactive tests are as follows.

1. At the start of this application SDD will force the KVM to complete an On-Demand Self-Test. If
any DTC’s are present when the ODST is completed, SDD will display a suitable message and the
application will exit. Any DTC’s in the vehicle must be resolved before using this function.
2. If there are 0 DTC’s in the KVM after the ODST is completed, SDD will then compare the number
of keys programmed to the KVM with number of keys found on the console. If the key counts
match, SDD will display a suitable message and the application will exit.
