Renewable Energy (Out with the Coal and In with the Renewable By Mrs. Helmick English 102 12 Apeil 2017, Outline ‘Thesis Statement: Fossil fuels have been essential for the world for centuries, but the usage of fossil fuels could be far more harmful than itis helpful to the world, The world should ‘convert into using renewable energy sources because ofthe effect fosil fuels have on the environment, the wars over fossil fuels, andthe depleting supply of fossil fuels. |The world should transition to clean, renewable energy because ofthe effect fossil fuels have on the environment. A. Fossil fuels release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that cause the average global emperature to rise at an alarming rate which is called Global Warming. Carbon dioxide emissions also cause the climate to drasticelly change. 1, Out of 014 scientists who have stated a postion on Global Warming, (97% ofthe scientists agree that humans are responsible for Global Warming (Cook), 2. 2014 was the hottest year on record across the globe since 1880 when record keeping began (“Is human activity..”) 3. The 10 warmest years in this 135-year period occurred between 1998 and 2014 (ls human act ity. 4, The average rise in sea level has doubled through the years of 1993 to 2010 (eos 83). [B. Global Warmirg is just a natural eycle and isnot affected by fossil fuels. 1 Earth's climate has always warmed and cooled, and the rise in average alobal temperature is @ natural fluctuation that has been heppening in the last 3,000 years ("Is human activity.” 2. More than one thousand scientist agree that buman activity isnot the ‘main reason for Global Warming ("Is human sctiviy.) 1. Nuclear energy is a potential clean energy source that has its downsides and benefits 'A. Nuclear energy is expensive o build and maintain, andthe potential disasters of nuclear plants could outweigh the benefits 1. "The US produces 2,000 tons oF nuclear wastea yea, and the US, ‘government does not curently havea place to store it. Nuclear waste can remain radioactive for thousands of years, an the effets can lead to rosny problems ("Nuclear Power forthe 21st Century: Is miclear power the answer to high uel costs and global warming’ 2. A nuclear plant locate in Georgia was extimsted to have four reactors and cost on billion dollars. The plant ended up having two reactors and costing nie billion dollars ("Nuclear Power fr the 2ist Century.) B, Nuclear enerey technology hes advanced greatly and this has made nuclear energy such more powerfl and safe, 1. Scicatists are designing nuclear reactors that re more safe compat, and efficient (Nuclear Power forthe 2Ist Centr.) 2 There is areator that is designed tobe fueledby miclear wast, so there will nt be any problems with disposing the niclear waste ("Nuclear Power forthe 21st Century. IL Renewable energy should bea focus because of the depleting supply of fossil fuels, |A, Fossil fuels ere quickly depleting and are going to last fora short amount of time, Lisa good idea to transition to renewable energy 80 that when the world runs out of fossil ics, there will be alternative ways o produce energy 1. The Peak Oil Theory was famous theory that predicted the peak of oil and stated that twill destino and deplete after the peak He predicted US cil production will peak inthe early 1970's and i 1971, his prediction ‘came rue (“Hubbers Peak, The Peak"). 2. n2010, 83% of power produce in the U.S was from fossil ful, 8% was from renewable energy and 9% was fom nuclear ("Energy Policy: Should the United States inerease domestic production of oil and nturl gas"). IV, Solar power isa viable source of renewable energy that hs is pros and cons. [A Solar power is expensive forthe amount of eneray it produces and is incredibly unreliable to provide a steady source of energy 1. The cost ofthe best quality solar panels are over 1,000 dollars, and the cos of storage forthe power is costly as well (Rinkesb. 2. Solar panels can only produce power during the daytime and can fluctuate according tothe weather (Rinkes). B, Solar technology is stil advancing and there many cases of solar panels supplying coough energy for many people. 1. There is enough energy fom the sun hat hits the earth or one our that could power the whole world for one year (Prov). 2. 1n2014, an estimated 20 gigawats of solar energy was installed inthe US., which is enough to power 4 milion homes (Provo) 3. The solar industry is cutently employing 175,000 people andthe industry is adding jobs ten mes faster than rest of he economy (Provo), 4. Theres an island located in American Samo that run solely on solar power The island bas 5,000 solr panel, 60 tesla power packs, and a system hat an prove three fll ays of power without sn trv). Renewable enory should bea focus because ofthe ret effets fossil fies have on people and animals A. Air pollution caused by fossil fuels is causing harm to people around the world Air polltion causes developmental delays in children and in some cases, lowers 1Qin children (Grossmar). 2. Air pollution causes unbom babies to have developmental disorders and learning dsbiles (Grossman, 3. Air pollution cause people to have diseases involving the hngs like asda and bronchitis (Grossman) B, The warming environment caused by fossil fuels is spreading diseases and causing thousands of deaths around the world, 1. The numberof dengue fever cass in Ameria increased fam 6,000 to 552,000 inthe span of26 years (Hoos 88-89), 2. The World Health Organization blames 140,000 premature deus every year on plobal warming since 2004 (Hoos 76), 3. The Global Hum itarian Forum says that global warming tas caused 300,000 premature deaths per year, and tha 99 percent ofthese premature deaths came from developing nations that contributed less than 1 percent ofthe global greenhouse ga emissions (Heos 76) VL Wind power isa source of renevable energy that ha its flaws and benefit. |A. Wind power is expensive and could do more harm than good tothe environment 1. Wind turbines or land and inthe ocean destroy ecosystems for animals and obstructs the view of nature (Rauber). 2. Wind turbines take an enormous amount of eneray to produce, construct, and setup. Wind turbines could potentially tke upto seven moaths of producing power to offe the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions to produce the turbine (Confit & Natural Resources") B, Wind power is already steady source of eneray across the United States. Wind power also has a large amount of potential on the coasts ofthe states and can Potentially produce gigantic amount of clean power. 1. Land based turbines provide 74 gigawats of power or 5.6 percent of America’s power (Rauber. 2. The Pacific Coast has enough space for turbines to produce 245 gigawats Which i enoughto power $5 to 73 milion homes (Rauber) 3. Floating turbine models are curently being created. These turbines will not obstruct the view ofthe ocean and can produce much more power than land based turbines (Rauber VIL Counter Argument ‘A. Transitioning to renewable energy will make thousands of people go jobless. LL. There ae 69,000 jobs in the coal mining industry and 194,000 jobs involved with natural gas and oil extraction (“A Just Tianstion for U.S. Fossil Fuel Industry Workers"), ‘According to Intemational Renewable Energy Agency's annual report, an estimated 8.1 million people were directly or indirectly employed by the renewable energy sector (“Renewable Energy and Jobs~ Annual Review 2016" (One million dollars on renewable energy investments can create 17 jobs hile one million dollars in the fossil fuel industry can create 5 jobs (Poll & Calli, ut withthe Coal and ln withthe Renewable Iti the year2100 and Hart, a young ee, bas never ada place called home, Haro ‘vas bor nthe beautify of Tokyo but couple of years ltr, Tokyo was hit bythe biggest hurricane ever corded, and Harato and his family were forced to move inland to the city of Nagano, Haro’ home, slong wth 15 million oer people's homes, wer destoyed by the hurricane, and the once beautiful city of Tokyo is now underwater. Harut’s life in Nagano was also shor lived a8 the whole country of Japan was completely underwater only a few years aftr the submerging of Tokyo Islands around the world were affected by this phenomenon, and tillions of people were forced to move to the inland countries, Hart's family moved to Sangh, but was not long before Shanghai and other coastal iis began to flood, Haruo along with the residents of Japan and Chines coastal cies were forced to move inland once agp, Haruto and others were fored to lve in camps onthe streets de othe lack of housing and overpopulation inthe inner counties Cites al over the world began to overpopulae, with ‘many peopl left homeless and a result, Haruo’ family and millions of people around the ‘world are stuck onthe steets with nothing Millions of people inhabit the streets of cites and the farmlands inthe country. One of the biggest problems Haruo and the entre world will soon face isthe food supply. The change in climate and temperature has cause agriculture to tke an enormous hit, preventing crops fom rowing, Aside from the climate changing the growing pattems of crops, the overpopulation of ‘he remaining towns and cites have limited the space for ops to grow. This will ean thatthe hundreds of millions of people that are shelerless, wll de due to starvation. The ivestock across the county wll also suffer asthe resoutes to maintain the Fivestock i at an all ime low. The scarcity of food will eause people to riot and fight for every litle ration. Parents will fight to
