Downtown Fitness wins 2010 battle

DELPHOS — The
2010 Canal Days Battle of
the Businesses champions
Downtown Fitness waged
war through 22 other teams;
dog biscuits, Vaseline and
oatmeal; and a tie-breaker
to take home the coveted
traveling trophy Friday eve-
ning. This was the first year
Downtown Fitness competed.
The 2009 champs, Fischer
Plumbing and Heating, reluc-
tantly gave up the hardware
at the end of the games.
Six games of little skill
and no athleticism had the
teams scrambling, dodging,
slipping and stretching for
points in the fourth annual
competition spearheaded by
Delphos Area Chamber of
Commerce member Cindy
Metzger of First Financial
Bank. Armed with 23 judges
to curb cheating, Metzger
introduced six games, includ-
ing Good Doggie, where bat-
tle members had to pick up
dog biscuits in their mouths
and drop them in a bowl;
Splash, where team members
had to use a power water
gun to fill a bucket held by a
teammate with as much water
as they could; Nose Dive
with Vaselined noses picking
up cotton balls; Cheeto Head
with shaving cream slathered
teammate catching cheese
puffs on their head; Poop the
Potato where contestants had
to run with a potato between
their legs and drop it in a
bucket without using their
hands; and Oatmeal Raisin
Relay with team members
searching for 1-point raisins
in oatmeal while trying to
avoid negative-point beans.
The top five teams
halfway through the bat-
tler were Vanamatic, first;
Fischer, second; Unverferth
Manufacturing, third;
Downtwon Fitness, fourth;
and Westrich Furniture
2, fifth. By the end of the
games, it was Vanamatic and
Downtown Fitness in the tie-
breaker. The two teams faced
off with two members each
and had to unwind an entire
roll of toilet paper with one

Old Landmark
Disappears
The razing of a building
which was one of the old
landmarks of Delphos has
practically been completed.
W.H. Clinger, of South
Clay street, recently pur-
chased the old Risley home-
stead, just east of the Senator
building at Third and Main
and is tearing it down.
The materials will be used
for the erection of a residence
in South Delphos.
The Risley homestead
was remodeled some years
ago, an addition having been
added at the front to convert
it into business rooms. The
second floor was still used
for residence purposes up to
the time the building was
sold to Lima parties.

sion to the rear of the Henry
Fanger building on North
Main street. He will make
use of the space provided on
the first floor in connection

Electric company is the par-
ent company of the North
Western Ohio Light com-
pany and the Ohio Power
Company.
The company is now con-
sidering the installation of
the oil burning equipment or
a coal conveyor system for
the more efficient and eco-
nomical handling of the fuel
at the plant here.
The company is also
proceeding with its plans
for the linking of the local
plant with Ft. Wayne and
Toledo for the purpose of
stabilizing the power and
light supply.
They are now installing
two new turbines at the plant
of the Western Ohio com-
pany at St. Marys, with the
current to be turned over to
the power company.

Council Will
Sell City
Property
The city council passed
a motion to present at
the next meeting an ordi-
nance asking for bids for sale
of various buildings on the
city-ground northeast of the
sewage disposal plant and
also for the sale of the house
and lot on South Washington
street.
The house in question
is now occupied by Carl
Gladen and his family. Mr.
Gladen is chief engineer at
the waterworks plant and has
been living in the house rent-
free for many years. It was
pointed out that the house
was purchased by the city
as the residence of the chief
engineer when there was
only one man employed at
the waterworks plant. After
two other engineers were
employed, the chief engineer
was permitted to continue
living there.
The buildings on the city
farm are in need of repairs
and the city wishes to use
the land for athletic activities
in the near future and it was
the opinion of council that
the farm should not be leased
again for farming.
It was the contention of
council that a considerable
savings could be made by the
sale of buildings and prop-
erty on South Washington
street.
Councilman Boniface
reported that city employees
will start to construct an ice-
skating pond east of the sew-
age disposal plant.

Will Sponsor
‘Coon Chase’
The members of the Old
Time Coon Hunters Club
will sponsor a coon dog field
trial and a dance on Sunday,
October 27 at R-Own Cottage
on the banks of the Auglaize
River, three miles east of
Delphos.
Ninety dogs were run in
the last race sponsored by
the organization, and the
October 27 event is expected
to prove no exception. Dogs
are expected from various
parts of Ohio, Michigan and
Indiana.
Entry fees will be $1
and it is guaranteed that
the entrance fee will be
returned 100 percent to dog
owners.
Heat money will be paid
to winners in each heat.

LCC soars over Bulldogs

COLUMBUS GROVE —
For the second time in as many
weeks, the Columbus Grove
Bulldogs football team faced a
former coach.
Last week, it was Ada’s
Micah Fell and on Friday
night, the ’Dogs matched up
with the Lima Central Catholic
Thunderbirds and previous
coach, Jerry Cooper.
The T-Birds had won the
previous three meetings against
Grove and made it four in a row
Friday with a 37-6 drubbing
of the home team. Quarterback
Tyler O’Connor (12-of-19 pass-
ing, 217 yards) led the LCC
attack with two touchdown pass-
es, while rushing for two scores
and placing a punt on the Grove
1 that eventually ended up with
the ’Birds scoring a safety.
Bubba Krieg added to the
Thunderbirds’ onslaught by
rushing for two scores: one from
65 yards out, the other on a
42-yard jaunt.
Devon Verhoff scored the
lone touchdown for Columbus
Grove on a 4-yard run late in the
third quarter.
LCC scored on its first four
possessions of the game, includ-
ing a 95-yard drive late in the
first half. O’Connor wasted no
time in getting the guests down
the field in the opening stan-
za, taking the first play from
scrimmage 38 yards upfield and
ending it on a 5-yard pitch to
Krieg, making it a 7-0 contest
(O’Connor added the kick) with
8:00 showing on the clock.
The Bulldogs ran into a
defensive brick wall, going
3-and-out on their first two pos-
sessions and turning the ball
over on a fumble on the Lima
Central Catholic 30 with 1:52
left in the first quarter.
The guests scored on their
second touch of the ball as
O’Connor hooked up with Krieg
for a 65-yard touchdown catch
and scored after the fumble
recovery as the LCC quarter-
back connected on a 22-yard
field goal to make it a 16-0 con-
test at 7:58 of the second canto.
Grove appeared to get some
momentum going as they drove
the ball and got into the red zone
but the drive stalled at the LCC
5 as a fourth-and-goal attempt
was cut short, giving the guests
the ball 95 yards away from
their end zone.
However, that didn’t stop
the Thunderbirds; they used a
14-play drive to the score. The
drive that was highlighted by
an O’Connor 30-yard run and
ended with the senior taking
the ball into the end zone from
2 yards out; after a botched
2-point attempt, it was 22-0,
LCC, just 18 seconds before the
break.

at Elida’s Kraft Memorial
Stadium Friday night.
Both teams entered the
game needing wins but for
different reasons: Elida
coming off a tough loss to
Van Wert after a 2-0 start;
Shawnee winless in their first
three games but against the
likes Marion Local, Ottawa
Glandorf and Kenton.
Junior quarterback Reggie
McAdams led Elida (3-1, 2-1
NWC) with two touchdown
passes while going 22-for-
39 for 293 yards, including
strikes of 21 and 8 yards.
Elida wasted no time in
scoring after a 3-and-out
by Shawnee, starting their
first drive at the 10:16 mark
at the 19. Ten plays later,
they found the end zone as

However, O’Connor pinned

Two plays later, Verhoff (12
rushes, 41 yards) was stopped in
the end zone for a safety and the
T-Birds had a 24-0 advantage at
9:56 of the period.
Grove elect to free kick off
the tee from the 20 but it mat-
tered none to LCC. Starting at
their own 47, 4 plays later Krieg
hauled in a 43-yard TD pass
from O’Connor, making it 31-0
with just under eight minutes
left in the third period.
The Bulldogs, down but not
completely out, answered back
and put together a 9-play drive
as Wade Heffner (3 catches, 46
yards) caught catches of 22 and
17 before a Verhoff run from
four yards out got the home
team on the board. With the
extra point try being no good, it
was a 31-6 score with 2:22 left
to go before the final stanza.
Columbus Grove then
attempted an onside kick but the
Thunderbirds were ready and
recovered at midfield. LCC used
the short field to their advan-
tage: an 8-play, 3-minute drive,
as Jonothan Washington made a
29-yard reception and a 15-yard
run to put the Thunderbirds
in position to score again.
O’Connor finished it off with a
10-yard run, making it 37-6 with
1:45 to go in the third.
The loss drops Columbus
Grove to 2-2 overall (1-2 NWC),
while the Thunderbirds move to
3-1 (3-0 NWC). The Bulldogs
travel to Spencerville next week
to take on the Bearcats, while
LCC hosts Jefferson Saturday
night at Lima Stadium.

Chase field features 5 winless drivers

NEW YORK — Jeff Gordon
has one win in his last 103 races
and is mired in the longest losing
streak of his illustrious career.
Yet as he heads into the Chase
for the Sprint Cup champion-
ship, he likes his title chances.
Why? Because the 4-time
champion believes consistency
can carry him to a fifth title.
“Consistency has always
been one of our strengths,
which is why I think the old
points system worked well for
us,” explained Gordon, who
won his last title in 2001 under
the season-long championship
structure, but has not finished
higher than second in five Chase
appearances. “We’ll approach
these 10 races with the same
mindset. Sure, you’re trying to
win each race but 10 races is
longer than many people realize.
You want to make sure you get
the absolute best finish you can
each week and not put yourself
into a position where you end
up with a 30th- or 35th-place
finish.
“Those are the things that
allow you to put top-5s and top-
10’ together to win champion-
ships.”
Gordon is one of five driv-
ers headed into Sunday’s Chase
opener at New Hampshire with
a 60-point deficit to leader
Denny Hamlin. He spent most
of the season ranked second in
the standings, dropped to third
after Saturday night’s race at
Richmond, then fell to eighth
under the reseed of the Chase
field.
He’s spent the past several
weeks downplaying his failure
to win a race this season, instead
choosing to focus on his 13
top-10 finishes over the first 26
races. He was in position to win
about five different times but
came up short and settled for
finishing second or third six dif-
ferent times this season.
So he now finds himself
at the back of the pack need-
ing a near flawless run at New
Hampshire to close the gap on
the championship leaders.
But there are many who
believe the champion will have
to win at least one race during
the Chase and there will be no
room for even one poor finish
in such a stout field. It makes
the opener at New Hampshire
critical under the seeding sys-
tem, particularly for the drivers
who already find themselves 60
points out.
Among them is Carl Edwards,
who had a red-hot summer to
toss his name
into the ring of
contenders. Still
winless since the
2008 finale, he
has managed to break free of
the early season Roush-Fenway
Racing problems to emerge as
their best championship hope.
Edwards has eight top-10 fin-
ishes in the last nine races; the
exception was a 12-place finish
at Bristol. So long as he qualifies
well, he thinks he’s got a shot
Sunday.
“It’s a short race without a
lot of cautions,
so qualifying will
be important,”
he said. “We’ve
been qualifying
a lot better lately
and our setups
have been pretty
good, so I’m very
optimistic that we
will be contenders at Loudon.
We need to start off the Chase
on the right foot and not get
behind from the start.”
Edwards is at the bottom of
the pack with teammate Matt
Kenseth, the 2003 series cham-
pion who has been up-and-down
this season and has just one top-5
in the last 14 races. Kenseth has
had three crew chiefs this season
and managed to stay inside the
top 12 despite the turmoil.
But New Hampshire is not a
great track for him. He was 17th
there in June, and in 21 career
starts has only 11 top-10s.
Also winless this season is
Clint Bowyer, who holds the
12th spot in the Chase field
and, like the others, is 60 points
behind Hamlin.
Bowyer, though, has been
running very well over the last
month and was the only driver
who had to race his way into the
Chase at Richmond. His sixth-
place finish was his third con-
secutive top-10, and all came
when he was racing to save
his season. He overcame a pit
road penalty at Bristol, an ill-
handling car at Atlanta and the
pressure of having to perform at
Richmond to lock up the Chase
with the three strong finishes.
But with just two career
Cup wins and none since 2008,
Bowyer is likely going to have
to get to Victory Lane to take
the championship. He grabbed
his first career
victory in the
2007 Chase
opener at New
Hampshire,
and it pushed him to a career-
best finish of third in the final
season standings.
Unlike Gordon, Bowyer
believes it’s going to take a win
or two to win the title.
Busch, Hamlin downplay
feud: The first sign of a lingering
discord between Hamlin and Kyle
Busch came after their 1-2 finish at
Richmond, when Busch made sure
to point out how clean
he raced his teammate
with the win on the
line.
A second verbal
volley was lobbed
during an episode of
Busch’s ESPN week-
long reality special,
when he made mention
of how difficult it is to
have a discussion with Hamlin. Fans
for sure noticed the back-to-back
jabs, and speculation mounted that
Joe Gibbs Racing’s two champion-
ship contenders were at odds.
Turns out, it’s much ado about
nothing.
The relationship between the two
JGR stars will be critical to man-
age over the next 10 weeks. The
teams rely on each other for infor-
mation and advice during at-track
debriefs and Busch’s crew gleaned
an important tip from Hamlin’s crew
right before Saturday night’s race
at Richmond that contributed to the
1-2 finish.
Managing and maintaining that
information flow will be the best shot
either JGR driver has at dethroning
4-time defending NASCAR cham-
pion Jimmie Johnson.
But there’s no denying the rela-
tionship has had its swings, most
notably earlier this season after a
wreck between the two in the All-
Star race and Busch vented over his
radio “I swear to God, I am going to
kill (him).”
It led to an immediate post-race
closed-door meeting with owner
Joe Gibbs and the issue seemed to
be settled. Then Hamlin fanned the
flames a week later in one of the
more entertaining press conferences
in years.
Gibbs helicoptered into the track
to be present for qualifying later that
day and the teammates have been
fairly quiet off the track since.
Busch and Hamlin have been
two of the best drivers all season.
Hamlin heads into the Chase
opener Sunday at New Hampshire
as the top seed. Busch, a 3-time win-
ner this season, is 30 points behind
Hamlin. Racing for the win Saturday
night at Hamlin’s home track, Busch
could have moved his teammate in
an effort to win the race and grab the
final 10 bonus points.
But he stayed in line, settled
for second and talked about it after
the race.
Both are quick to credit each
other for where they are right now
and it will be interesting to see how
it plays out over the next 10 weeks.
The communication has never been
better and Busch credits Hamlin for
helping him improve his short track
program.

•Yes we do. Just stop by the shop and have your name added to our “wish list”
file. We’ll add you to our database and call you when we come across an item
you are looking for.
3. Will you hold something I like until I can afford to pick it up?
•No, but, we do have a lay-away program!
7. How do you determine what my item is worth?
• We examine the item and then utilize several trade references to establish a
baseline value. After that, several additional factors are considered, among them
condition. If you have an item that looks like new and you still have the original
box, accessories, and instructions, the value will be greater than for a similar item
with some scratches and missing pieces.
• The next thing to consider is demand. It just depends on what’s trendy and
selling.
8. We are closing out an estate, can you help us?
•Absolutely, we also buy estates. Just give us a call.
9. Do you only deal with used items?
• No, you will also find some new items here. If we find a good deal at a close
out, or through a bulk buy, we pass the savings along to you.

4. Do you charge anything to give me a value
on an object I’d like to sell?
• No, there is no charge for value estimations. And, it is totally up to you
whether you want to accept our offer or not. We work on a Win/Win basis. We
both have to be happy with the transaction.
•The amount offered must be fair to you and for us too. After all, we do intend
to resell whatever we purchase.
5. Are there any restrictions as to who may sell items?
• You must own the item, be at least eighteen years of age, and present a gov-
ernment issued picture ID.
6. I would like to purchase a firearm from an online merchant but,
they will not ship it directly to me. Can you help?
• Yes we can. These are known as transfers. And, since we hold a valid federal
firearms license, we are able to provide you with this service. You can have the
firearm shipped to us and we can complete the transfer here at the store.

10. If you have something I would like to purchase but I don’t have
the money right now. Will you take payments?
• Payments no. But, we do have a lay-away program!
11. I only need a few dollars until payday.
Can you hold my item and just give me a short term loan?
