Reflection

I believe that through the Civic Engagement assignment and our studies about early

government structures in the Humanities 1010 class, I have become a more aware and thus

better citizen in my community. I understand more about the importance of participation from

each individual and how our contributions form a great community where people can receive

the service they need, and we have the ability to defend our freedoms. Participation in my

chosen civic engagement activity and even more so, the reflection required to write about the

activity, provided me the opportunity to see myself as a more involved community member and

the importance to be that throughout my life.

My biggest accomplishment in Humanities 1010 was the knowledge I acquired through

learning about history, the arts, gender equality, religious acceptance and my right and

obligation to fight for the freedoms necessary to live. I believe I gained a greater understanding

through this course about how to be a more informed and less ignorant citizen. The civic

engagement assignment really helped me reach outside my busy, sometimes self-focused life

and recognize how service to the community helps all of us achieve the goals essential to

maintain our freedom.

Throughout the Humanities 1010 course, I became a better writer and evaluator. I

enjoyed the discussion questions with which we participated each week as an opportunity to

read how others view the world and the important topics introduced throughout the class. This
course also gave me the skill to think critically about how I specifically can be more selfless in

my actions and thoughts and view my role in society as one of importance. My individual

contributions are needed to help society function.
