Family and Consumer Sciences Focus on the Human Dimension: The Expanded Food and
Nutrition Education Program Example

The family and consumer science program is recognized as a program that helps to
educate families, particularly families of lower socioeconomic status, on domestic sciences. The
Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program was started in the 1960’s primarily to educate
lower income families of the importance of food nutrition and safety. At the time poverty and
hunger ran wild in the U.S. and efforts to distribute agriculture proved ineffective. The EFNEP
quickly became the best way to reach disadvantaged families. To date, the program has equipped
more than 32.5 million disadvantaged families by educating them about food nutrition. Studies
show that adults who participate in such programs improve their way of living through food
choices and physical activity.

Hollywoods movies may be having a greater impact on mother nature than expected. The
Appalachian Trail has seen a 60% increase of people using the trail each year since Bill Bryson’s
book, A Walk in the Woods, was published. In 2015 a movie was created based on Bryson’s
book. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy has been trying to raise awareness about not leaving a
trace when hiking. Many hiking trails gain popularity after a movie is made about them. This
could have damaging impacts on the trails, but the director of “A Walk in the Woods” hopes the
movie will help to raise consciousness of the environment.
