Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

UDL is embedded in this lesson in various ways.
I. Multiple means of representation: alternatives for visual and auditory information, clarification of
vocabulary and symbols, promoting understanding across languages
III. Multiple means of engagement: optimize choice and autonomy, relevance, value and authenticity

The objective of the lesson is to introduce colors in English (for English language learners). Introducing
colors visually and via audio provides students multiple paths to understanding. Students will choose how
to demonstrate understanding using a variety of available tools.

Lesson idea implementation:

Teacher will introduce lesson. “There are many colors in the world. The sky is blue, the grass is green, and
lemons are yellow. Colors make the world interesting and fun. A world without colors wouldn't be the same”.
Teacher will show narrated Power Point and provide handout that includes color term, color, and examples of
items that are examples of that color (see Appendix). Teacher and students will discuss comments, questions,
and misconceptions.

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
Students will be prompted to demonstrate understanding by creating a Power Point, picture, video, or
written response. Students will include the English color term, the color name in their native language, an
image of that color, and a real life example of something that typically is that color. Students will share (to
level of comfort) with classmates.
Students will have access to narrated Power Point for review/example, as well of other BPT.

Reflective Practice:
This technology allows is very good for all students. This basic lesson is a good way to introduce a concept to
students with visuals and audio. It also supports UDL principles and differentiation (review, multiple means of
representation).
