Sandra Alters, an author of many published works, presents an article speaking upon the

past and recent court rulings on gun control. The main argument is whether or not the rulings are

protecting the public or restricting their rights. She explains that many laws have been enacted at

the local, state, and federal level to regulate weapons. Yet, with the universally divided topic,

Alters goes to explain that there is an aspect that is generally accepted by the public and that is

that gun ownership be denied to felons, those who are deemed mentally disabled, and individuals

not of “sound mind”. This article contributes to a perspective that the discussion of gun control

has always been a major topic and that it is not finished. It contributes to the knowledge of what

exactly has been at the table of discussion for a very long time and how exactly it got to the point

of what it is now. Alters provides well in-depth information on these Court rulings which I plan

to use to express the difficulty that Congress faces as they attempt to make laws that not only

satisfy the public but also protect them as well.

Sandra Alters, an scholarly author, has a purpose in this article to give the readers

knowledge of the contrast in the United States over firearm laws. She explains how most

individuals feel when it comes to these gun laws. Through the use of statistics she explains that

men and Republicans are more likely to support guns rather than women and Democrats. This

article contributes to giving the public a sense of how divided the United States is as a country

upon gun control.

“Gun Control - ProCon.org.” Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted in the United States?

www.gun-control.procon.org/

This is a non-profit charity organization supported by donations who brings an good

amount of information to the public through usage of pros and cons arguments. There is much

talk in this article about the issues of gun control and even provides background of past issues

that have arisen. In addition to the issues provided, there are also many statistics provided. They

use the statistics to explain the pros and cons chart that’s provided about gun control. The pros

and cons chart goes into depth about how some of the gun laws are beneficial and how exactly

they can have a negative impact also.

This article provides my research with vivid details that I could use to explain gun

control. I plan to use these details to discuss the arguments that the positive and negative affects

bring upon current gun control laws possessed by the United States as a nation. It would allow

for me to give greater detail backed with arguments within my paper to give my readers an idea

of how this topic is so controversial. This will also allow the reader to understand why so many

people are upset behind this topic.

"Media Coverage of Mass Violence." Opposing Viewpoints Online Collection, Gale, 2017.

In this reference guide, the topic of discussion is the media’s display of mass violence.

The guide goes to an extent of discussing that while the news tend to cover violence they lean

towards the most violent crimes. They also acknowledge that the news creates images and

encourage stereotypes. In particular they describe that white men are portrayed more

sympathetically than those of color, when in reality it has been proven that white men have

committed most mass shootings. Also mentioned is the attempt to crack down on how much is

covered in the media. This section of the article is to give the reader an idea that not all people

support what is exactly said in the media. Too much coverage has also been said to inspire those

who are copycats, or those who want to commit the crime in a much more horrified way. I plan

to use this article to bring light upon how exactly the media has an influence on gun control. The

media not only helps the public know what’s going on, but also can have a negative impact upon

the public.

Stolberg, Sheryl Gay, et al. “Is This the Moment for Gun Control? A Gridlocked Congress Is

Under Pressure.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 25 Feb. 2018,

www.nytimes.com/2018/02/25/us/politics/gun-control-congress-governors.html

In this article from a popular newspaper, Sheryl Stolberg’s, a journalist, main focus has

been on gun control. The trigger of such topic is the recent school shootings and in particular the
mass shooting in Parkland, Florida. She states that there are many discussions about how

Congress is scheduled to go back into session and that gun control is going to be a hot topic

amongst many others. A topic that people are no longer letting go to rest.

The article goes to a great extent of explaining how Congress is not going to let the gun

control go unnoticed when they come back into session. It explains that the majority of people

are upset and scared. The gun laws that are now in place do not protect the public in any way

from these mass shootings. If this topic is not addressed by Congress, this could potentially

affect politics.

This article happens to be beneficial to me because it provides me with a situation which

caused the discussion of gun control and how the public is reacting towards these decisions. As I

plan to discuss the issues within our gun control laws, I could mention how the public feels and

how Congress is affected by these protests that are arising behind the recent shootings in schools.

Teenagers are now implementing their voices. Through this article you will learn exactly

how a group of teenagers are attempting to make a difference to the current gun laws. Also

mentioned are a few of the individuals who originated the idea of putting a stop to gun violence

once and for all. The objective was to obtain the attention of Congress and get those in office to

reconsider the United States gun laws.

Williamsen, Kurt. "A Weak Cultural Morality Can Be Blamed for Gun Crime." Guns and Crime,

New American, vol. 23, 28 May 2007, pp. 17-21.

Kurt Williamsen, the editor and publisher of The New American, has compared to many

other countries that the United States has a very high rate of gun violence. In this scholarly

article they discuss many other countries and their morals which is said to lead to low gun

violence. As they speak of these other countries, they reference the United States and how it is

different. The purpose of this article is to bring criticism upon the United States saying that the

cultural morality is “weak”. In my research, the plan is to use this to reference how other cultures

are different from the U.S.
