obtained this award during my senior year of high school. This project was for students whom are
bilingual, students who can speak two languages fluently. The Seal of Biliteracy is a certificate that
indicates you can speak, write, and read two languages fluently. The first process of obtaining this
certificate was writing an essay in English about how your target language has influenced your life
and how it will help your future. The second step of earning it was to write an essay in your target
language, which was to answer the prompt completely in your target language. The third and final
step of getting the Seal of Biliteracy certificate was going through an interview in both Hmong and
English. The interviewers asked the students various questions and grades them on how well they
spoke in your target language and in English. When I discovered that I have obtained this
certificate, I was excited, shocked, and thrilled. The reason why I take great pride in the Seal of
Biliteracy is because it will help my future positively and it offers me many great opportunities.
Since I want to become a Hmong teacher and teach students about the Hmong language, culture,
and history, this certificate indicates that I am certified that I understand how to speak, read, and
write in Hmong. Again, earning this certificate is a great accomplishment because I can help
translate for those who do not understand English and it gives me an advantage to become a
Hmong teacher since it defines I can write, read, and speak Hmong fluently.
