Standards: Developing understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and
subtraction within 20.

Lesson Performance Objective: Given candy as manipulative, students will be able to add and subtract
using their math skills with 80% accuracy.

Materials:

 M&M’s
 Candy Corn
 Smarties
 Pencil for each student
 Monster Math by Anne Miranda

Background Knowledge Required:

 Counting, adding and subtracting single digits.

Student Groupings: Individual, Pairs, and Table Teams.

Anticipatory Set:

 Read the Monster Math by Anne Miranda


 Then talk about how we previously were adding and subtracting using the change
method.

Instruction:

 Demonstrate with I have some pumpkins and I give some to my friend how many do I
have kinds of questions.
 I have seven smarties and my shoulder partner has three smarties. How many smarties
do we have together?
 I have three blue M&M’s and five green M&M’s. How many blue and green M&M’s do I
have?
 I ask the students how many M&M’s they have.
 How many Red M&M’s do you have? How many candy corn do you have?
 How many candy corn is at your whole table?
 How many red M&M’s do you have between you and your shoulder partner?

Closure:
 Talk with your shoulder partner about how many pieces of candy you have together.
Raise your hand when you know.

Assessment/Evaluation:

 In class questions and answers after group and individual work.
