Putting it all together & Comparison Beliefs

I interviewed Bo Wan, I know he is in this class but I’ve known him from previous
semesters. Bo knows three languages, Chinese, Japanese, and English. He believes language is a
powerful tool that can help bridge gaps between different types of people, and also believes
that language is something that makes us human beings.

 Language is more than just speaking with other people. It involves reading and writing,
and is a useful tool that humans use to communicate with each other. Language can be seen
through nonverbal communication, and even art which can expresses a wide range of
emotions.
I personally had not thought much about the importance of defining what language
truly is before this assignment. It was hard for me to come up with specifics regarding it,
because to me it was all just language. I did not realize how much I took language for granted.
One thing that was different from my original thoughts about language and from Bo’s thoughts
of language is that it is what makes us human. It was really interesting to hear him talk about
how language is used to express our humanity. If it were not for language Bo and I could not
communicate our thoughts to each other. I now agree with Bo that language bridges gaps
between very different people, and helps communities and cultures connect. Before
interviewing Bo I did not really understand that relationship between language and culture.
