Statement of Research Interest Che Dieudonne Tabong Research Area and Current Interest I am broadly interested in structural characterisation and elucidation of molecular structures in science with a special interest in X- ray crystallography. Specifically, my future research interest is shaped by the fact that in scientific research today, Elucidation of molecular structure is necessary to identify or confirm the structural identity of a chemical compound during chemical research or product development. Unknown substances or impurities can be difficult to identify. Chemical structural elucidation of new and novel compounds is necessary to support compound regulatory submissions for a number of scientific and industrial sectors such as agrichemicals, pharmaceutical and new chemical entity registrations. Current and Past Research In my past research work during my PhD program, working as part of group, the synthesis, characterisation and applications of coordination compounds, particularly of Nitrogen and Oxygen donor ligands with the first and second row transition metals was of major interest. The synthesis methods general included, hydrothermal synthesis, sol-gel and calcination to yield products, as well as evaluation of the biological and magnetic tivities of the synthesized complexes. During the work, although major characterisation techniques such as Infrared and UV/Visible spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric analyses, X-ray diffraction studies and microscopic techniques were used, x-ray crystallography was of utmost importance in the confirmation of the proposed and resulting structures. As such, understanding and better characterising chemical entities through x-ray crystallography is probably the most important technique to determine the structure of any molecule; from small molecules to large supramolecular assemblies as well as assemblies biological macromolecules at atomic resolution since the x-rays are electromagenetic radiation with wavelengths in range of the same dimensions of the distance of atoms in molecules. As such, the position of every atom in the molecule is determined within a relatively small range of uncertainty. With a successful elucidation of an actual structure for a given compound, the results have implications in a wide variety of fields related to the functions of the studied molecule such as material science, drug design, mineralogy, molecular dynamics, catalysis and many more. Future Research Aspirations In this regar’ds, more hands on x-crystallography, ranging from sample preparation, mounting, recording and extraction of data, computation and interpretation of data and registration of data in public database systems such as Cambridge crystallographic Database Centre will help me to be better off in the development of my country and the word at in interdisciplinary research ranging from Organic chemistry, material science, inorganic chemistry material science, physical chemistry and even computational chemistry
