El origen de la papa

Mitos del antiguo Perú

1. Pre-reading activities: The teacher puts up posters and displays the photograph of the potato
vendor at the Pizac market in Perú. (Photo included) A real potato could also be shown.
Students think up and write their predictions about the possible origin of the potato and put
them in a time capsule (an envelope or interesting container) with their name on them to be read
aloud after the story is presented Students should also share their predictions orally before
reading.

2. Intensive reading activity: Students read through the myth looking for phrases with similar
meaning in the story. The initial list is in the order found in the story. Students then connect the
synonym by drawing a line to the actual words on the right as they read them.

3. Second reading: Students read the story again with their new vocabulary knowledge.

4. Writing activity: Without reference to tthe story they will use their synonym guide and
complete the cloze summary. This could be done in small groups or with an overhead
transparency.

5. Sinthesis activity: Ask students to draw a picture to illlustrate this story. Remind students to
complete the entries on their graphic organizer.

5. Discussion activity: Students are assigned to small groups and asked to create a list of
alternative morals to encourage a discussion on morals and how they relate to their lives today.
A list of morals is included. At lower language levels this list could be used with a short lesson
on introductory remarks for interrupting, stating an opinion and disagreeing politely..
Brainstorming for prior student knowledge is a good way to get this idea going.
 EL ORIGEN DE LA PAPA
La leyenda de la papa

Wiracocha relató a Juan esta bella leyenda:

-Cuentan que un cacique habitaba el litoral, prendado de una diosa que

vivía en una isla tuvo un castigo que mereció su osadía.

El lugar era prohibido para los mortales ya que sólo dioses podían
habitarlo. Sin embargo, el Curaca de piel oscura nadó hasta allí para sorprender
a los dioses, pero al contrario, el Cacique fue sorprendido por éstos quienes lo
castigaron por indiscreto.

-¿Cómo: (preguntó el niño)

-Al descubrir el amor prohibido entre la diosa y el mortal, los demás

dioses, furiosos, lo ocultaron en la tierra condenándolo a ser comido por los
demás mortales, para siempre, y cubriéndole su cuerpo de ojos, pero todos
ciegos, lo habían convertido en papa.

I. Adivinar el mito. Escribir tu adivinanza y meterla en la cápsula

de tiempo.

II. Buscar la frase en la leyenda que es sinónimo. Conectar las frases sinónimas con
una raya.

IV. Sin referirte a la leyenda, usar el vocabulario arriba y hacer el resumen de la leyenda.
