8.9 Students analyze the early and steady attempts to abolish slavery and to realize the ideals of the Declaration of Independence.
8.10 Students analyze the multiple causes, key events, and complex consequences of the Civil War.
Big Ideas
As students engage in this unit, they must continue to sharpen their thinking skills, especially when it comes to thinking like a historian.
They will do this by asking themselves, “How was the Civil War a political and social turning point?” Students should also think about
“why a civil war is an especially bitter conflict.”
Unit Goals
After completion of the unit, students will be able to articulately describe the following:
The causes of the Civil War
Major battles of the Civil War
The Reconstruction Period
Unit Summary:
In this Unit students will begin to understand how divided the country was prior to the outbreak of war. Students will have remembered
learning about the many differences that existed between the early days of the northern and southern colonies, and how these major
differences only continued to increase the division between the regions. As we turn to the war itself, students will again see how specific
differences, such as geography, played a major role in determining several outcomes during the war, and towards the wars conclusion.
More importantly, students will learn about the battles that shaped the war, and how and why the North ultimately prevailed. Lastly,
students will learn about the attempts the Federal government made in trying to bring back together the Union, as well as the efforts to
help African Americans play a much larger role in the governing of their own lives.
