CROWFUNDING AT VIRGINIA TECH “JUMPS” ON CAMPUS TO HELP


STUDENTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

BLACKSBURG, VIRGINIA –Students and faculty at Virginia Tech have started

to use Jump, a crowdfunding campaign that is a prevalent fundraising platform on school

grounds since the spring 2017 semester to raise money for proposals that benefit multiple

communities.

JUMP allows individuals affiliated with an academic or student unit to facilitate

donors to support service, research, scholarship or immersion projects through donations.

Students, staff or faculty are able to publish a brief description of a project that embodies

a meaningful mission to influence their community on the Jump website to send out to

alumni, family, friends and professors to gain support.

Passionate leaders that stick with their program from pre-planning to their

conclusion pilot crowdfunding campaigns. Using Jump conveys a sense of urgency to the

public that promotes the mission in addition to reaching the leader’s goal. The Black

Male Excellence network is a student organization on campus that is currently using

Jump to host a cultural immersion trip to study Afro-Cuban culture in Havana, Matanzas

and Viñuales, Cuba, from June 8-15, 2018. Tommy Amal, Tommy Amal, an officer that

headed up this project says that Jump allowed for them to heighten their awareness: while

also meeting their financial goals Jump allowed to them to heighten their awareness

by Jump, exploited by Jump contributed to the success of our mission”.” So far, they

have reached 59 donors and are 93 percent funded.

Current projects are being reviewed for Fall 2018, while projects that were

accepted for Spring 2018 are in full swing, including the Community Cultural Immersion

trip and Design- Build Train Observatory.
